A 3 dog night cover I've been working on for 6 weeks! It's been a pig.

I don't use loops, I know everybody does and says I'm crazy, they're mostly right. So I'm playing the drums. I didn't use a tick track or tempo map, so "it floats" a little, but I think that gives it a bit of a live feel? I'll be checking out some other folks stuff this evening after work. I hope this little diddy helps kick off your weekend!

I'm also playing my Latin Percussion Congas (mic'ed) a shaker, and a tamborie.

The Taylor 754 12 string, My warwick fretless (it's a challenging bass line...) ahh, there's some electric guitar in there, NI's B4 on the hammond. Lots of vocal tracks. They're not edited, so there are some imperfections, but it gives it character :-) I hope you enjoy it, it's an old favorite of mine.

Good job on that cover, Robbie! The only nit I have is that the drums could be crisper. Great vocals!
 
heh, it was a monster... Took me 6 weeks! I hear you 60's guy on the drums? I actually just posted the 1st remix and the drummer is the "can you hear me NOW!?" guy from the commercial ;-) And I added a full voice high part on the "How does your light shine" part. You can't beat the old classics... I'm working on a VH cover with a colaborator. I didn't think I could do DLR, but as a fat old white guy? I can actually do him pretty good :-) I don't look as good in the spandex though :-( Even though I wear 3 socks?
 
Just put a new remix up, added some multi-band saturation to the drum bus (Saturn... HIGHLY recommended) I think it's better :-)
 
Good cover of a great song. Took me back to a long time ago.

I thought the kick was way too much. Dial that back a bit and it's golden.

Nice mix Robby, as always. Your reason for posting here is obviously to get any constructive crit to improve the production. Once before I said that the vocals were too high in the mix. Its fine in this one but it sounds like its all head voice and for that, somewhat thin, if only a touch. Your voice is great, I just wondered if you could add more strength to it while singing. I don't think any post-processing can achieve that. Throw a little more diaphragm into it, just a bit, and it should strengthen that vocal track just enough.

Legend, you were right, that kick was out of control. I pulled it back a bit. Thanks very much for the recommendation. And nothing against the loops, I know most people use them and they save a lot of time. I used to give my drummer a hard time, but now I have much respect for drummers.

I think a large majority of people that post here don't use loops. If they do, it's simply out of necessity since they can't play/record drums. Even then, guys like Ido or RayC will post a song with drum loops, but they'll try to get real drums on them through collaboration. If we exclude rap or any kind of "dance" music, I bet most people would prefer to not use loops.
 
By loops, does that mean VSTi's like ezdrummer?? If so, then yup, guilty as charged. But for the reasons Rami stated. Someday, I might get a set of edrums to trigger samples. I'll never get real drums because they are too loud for the sleeping family. Record late at night mostly.

Yeah, still have Shambala echoing in my head. :)
 
yes, that's what I meant, like a drum program where you slice and dice someone elses stuff to fit in your song. I don't have the coordination to actually play them, and don't have a drummer, even though I do have a Yammaha DTX set in the studio? The boy likes to turn it on and bang on them :-) He's actually got some rhythm?

What I do (and did here) is to play along with 2 fingers on the keyboard,

1. Kick and snare

2. Hats closed and open

3. fills and toms

4. ride and other cymbals.

And then edit it... It takes a lot of time, but I feel like it gives a more authentic sounding drummer? My VSTi is BFD2, it has the other capabilities to use pre-programed beats, but I don't use it that way.

And a lot of people use programs like Trillogy for bass? As a bass player from back in the day, I pluck mine :-) And it took a long time, but I'm not half bad on the fretless these days :-) Some people even use simulated guitar (harrassy!)

The Sitar on Shambala (there is one in there back in the mix) was my keyboard, I don't have a Sitar "yet..."
 
Well no? I played the drums? I just played them with my fingers? Being a drummer is like being a **** star... You have to have certain "physical gifts?" If you don't have them, but you can feel it/see it in your head? Then again... I did a scene with Jenna Jameason? I just didn't have the "equipment" required to film it? But I didn't use loops of other guys? I think you can be a quadrapalegic and be a drummer, it's up here (points at noggin) not down here (points at arms and legs)

Technically, being a drummer is pushing buttons? They're just covered with a different material. And they are bigger buttons. Using loops is someone else pushing those buttons? There is a notable difference.

"Good form Dude..." Drumming is in your head, not in your feet and your hands. Like all of the rest of music? It's in here (points at heart) You have to feel it.
