I really wanna get the sustained sound of synyster gates. I know it's the pickup he has, but I really don't know how all that stuff works. If someone tells me what I would actually need it would be great :)

Wait, are you serious? I never thought his sound was anything special. In fact, I've always used him as an example of how they'll give anyone a signature model of anything.

I'm sure you can find out about all of his gear with the google.

Yeah, if you're really after that sound then this is a good place to start: Avenged Sevenfold - Synyster Gates Guitar Gear Rig and Equipment

BTW, I don't think his sound is due to the pickups he uses. At least, not entirely. I think a lot more of it depends on the amps he's using.

How about we start here: what is your current guitar setup? Guitars, pickups, pedals, amps... what are you using?

Yeah, spill the beans....

His sound is nothing you can't get yourself with a decent guitar and a high gain amp cranked loud. And I'm not dogging on him, I just don't think his sound is particularly special or noteworthy. It's a pretty standard professional modern metal sound.

oh okay, well I have a fender strat which I don't tend to use for metal, more for my band where we play pretty much rock. I also have an Ibanez very similar to the GRG170DX which I use a lot for heavier playing. I play and record through a marshall mg50fx

I don't know anything about tubes, so can someone explain please?

Simple, you're going to get more sustain from a tube amp than a solid state amp.

oh I see, but is the part of the amp that gives more sustain the head of the amp or the cab?

The player and guitar have more to do with sustain than the amp.but a quality tube amp is pretty damn important for that meaty saturated naturally compressed overdriven tone.

The cab and speakers have little to do with sustain unless they're total junk and falling apart. Sustain is in your hands and how you use your gear.

hmmm, just now I cranked the gain onto full and seemed to be getting more joy. Has anyone perhaps got a sample of a tube amp in action? I probably have heard one before but I really don't know a lot about amps, or guitars tbh, I can just play guitar not bad

You mean this kind of stuff?

Just get the right amp, crank it up and kick it in the ass with some OD pedals and stuff....it's not that hard to get things screaming.

I'm always looking more for the clean, but almost endless sustain, without the heavy OD flavor...but that's for a different style of music.

You would be hard pressed to find a metal album where the guitarist is not using a tube amp. Mr. gates uses a tube amp. most professional guitarist do. its also not just the fact that it is a tube amp, you need to get the type of tube amp that distorts the way that you need it to.
Luckily, you are trying to get close to a sound that is pretty common and that link above Will tell you which amp you need to get.

yeah, that kinda stuff. Man he seriously shreds that solo doesn't he!
When you use OD pedals, do they completely take over the sound from the amp or do they just add to it?

well now ..... not that I know much about Synister Gates ..... but he does use a sustainiac pickup so that sustain is from the pickup itself.
It works sorta like an E-Bow so you can get endless sustain.
So for that you would need to buy a sustainiac p'up and install it.
I would imagine they need a battery for them to work.

This doesn't change all the suggestions for a good tube amp. You're really gonna want that too.
But with a sustainiac pickup you can get endless sustain from any amp .... even a tabletop radio if you ran your git into it!

OD/Distortion pedals are an entire world of debate all by themselves.
Some color the sound a lot ...... others can be very transparent ...... there are hundreds and hundreds of them and every one sounds different.
A working guitarist can almost not have too many of them.
I have 20 at least and there's probably 30-40 more I'd like to have.

Okay thanks :)

Yeah I did look at it and it looked very complicated and expensive. I think if I were to get that then it would be with a new guitar.

I better start building my collection then! ;) I am thinking actually of getting a pedal board and 1 or 2 pedals for christmas because I don't really have anything else in mind tbh

I had a sustainer pickup come in for repair. Unfortunately it had a cracked bobbin, so I didn't dig too deep into the pickup itself, but I did school myself on the workings. There's an electromagnet built in that excites the strings to give the never ending sustain. The technology has been around for a very long time. I like the fact that it's not synth. They're cool in a hair band sort of way, but still just a gimick. Spend your money on an amp.
