What do you mean "best"?

By the numbers, an uncompressed .avi file will have no loss of data compared to one of the smaller formats. However, they're also hard to work with what with how huge they are.

Well I had a 5 minute video, with two audio tracks along with it. When I first changed it to avi and clicked render the quality was so bad. Eventually I got it to a reasonable quality by changing the fps to 10,000, but there must be an easier way?
So what I mean by best is what is the best quality

I'm afraid I don't know at that point.

Matching the settings of the input video should, from what I understand of the theory, result in an output video with no loss of quality. I'm not entirely sure if Reaper is a great program for video editing either. The interface is pretty intuitive (to me, at least), but whenever I've tried it, my computer grinds to a halt. I use Windows movie maker...

When I first had the problem I did have a go with windows movie maker instead but I couldnt sync the audio with the video very easily

well I have the project in reaper, and rendering is when I actually export it into a video format

I haven't used Reaper for video, sure it has some neat tricks, but setting your fps to 10000 can't be right!

That's what I thought! this is the video.
As you can see the quality is just about acceptable, but it really shouldn't be like that. And by the way, the original video was good quality, miles better than the finished product for sure
