What's with mono drum room mics?

I still think that if you don't like the width of a stereo mic'd instrument, you should fix that at tracking time, but I see the points you're making too.

I suppose you're right. Earlier when I said I might want other instruments to sit wider than the drums, it made sense,

but what you're saying makes sense too.
Like, if i pan 100% each way, it doesn't necessarily mean the kit will sound unnaturally wide. It's all about where I put the mics.

Cheers for opening this can of worms RAMI. I definitely got something out of it!

It totally makes sense. Like I said, that's a mix decision you're making with the goal of making the song sound "better" which, in the end, is all that matters.

HA! I was actually going to post "Thanx guys, I genuinely got a bit of an education in this thread."

"Natural" depends on where you are imagining the listener is listening from. I f you are putting the listener behind the drum set, the drums will be panned wide. if the listener is on the other side of the room, the drums will be panned narrow.

Yeah, I was talking more in general when I said that not much about recording is really about what's natural.

hey guys. i am pretty new to mixing and i have a problem with a new project i am working on. the drum tracks that i have are: one mono overhead, one kick and one snare. can anyone tell me how i can "convert" my overhead from mono to stereo and how i can pan my toms l/c/r?

It don't work that way. Think about it- you have taken this one image point from above your drums. It's a mix of everything arriving from all across your kit. There is nothing -no separate information' in a mono 'view to 'pan out.
You can add 'stereo information i.e, reverb, 'reflections to it (around it) which can have the effect of 'width and depth added, but..
