Weird Rolling Stones cover

I don't know what possessed me to do this. I like doing covers if I can knock one out in a day, 2 at the most. Any more than that, I'd rather spend it working on an original.

So, I was listening to this and started doing the piano part on guitar and thought it would be a cool cover to knock out. By the time I learned all the piano parts on guitar and was able to play them, then learning all the "string" parts and layering 6 tracks of slide guitar to try to get close to it, etc....it took me 4 days to get this done.

I had no idea it would be so much work, but once I started I couldn't stop.

So here it is. A bit of an obscure Stones tune. Rip it apart, worship it. Whatever. It is what it is. :D

You might want to listen to the original to see what I did with it.

Your welcome man. I didn't find it in the least bit weird. It's definitely a little deeper into the Stones stack, and a personal favortie of mine - Brian Jones really brought some great stuff to the table. I really found myself wanting to hear the LSO behind you on this track, but unfortunately opportunities for collaborations like that are rare :-) I could tell you went all in on the guitar parts - really special in the break-down where it's just the guitar. I've been doing nothing but covers lately as a way to work on my playing/as a form of practice. I think it's a real blast and find it gives me a lot of food for thought about how the masters approached structure, parts, vocals and mixing....

Cool. I had no idea it was the LSO playing those parts. Christ, I'm glad I didn't know that when I started covering it, it would have totally psyched me out. :D

I love doing covers, too. It's always a nice break to not have to "create" something, and only have to worry about learning parts. But I always learn something after finisheng a cover. Either about song-writing, arranging, recording,etc...I always come out of doing a cover with some kind of education. In this tune, it's the first time I can say that I think I improved as a guitar player after doing this, just because of the amount of times I had to practice all those parts until I got them right.

Oh - RAMI - I don't know for certain that it was the LSO - I was just imagining it while listening to your track :-) I used LSO as I do know there is an entire album of stones tracks from the LSO :-) It was the subject of that lawsuite with the band 'the verve' - they had to turn over all royalties for their biggest hit 'bittersweet symphony'.

Oh good. :)

So that exapains the lawsuit against The Verve. I heard about that, but, while "Bittersweet" has a Stones sound to it, I could never figure out what song they actually rippped off, and I thnik I know every Stones tune. So, they lifted the orchestra parts from an album of orchestral versions of Stones tunes? Might have ruined theor career, haven't heard from them since. Oh well......

That is the story as I know/remember it. I have a friend with 'three note ears', encyclopedic musical knowledge and can identify really obscure shit in about 3 notes. I first remember him calling out the connection before the controversy. I think I need to resort to google so as to not repeat this story any further if it's not true :-)
 
This is actually one of my favourite Stones tracks...i know its a cover for fun so i hope you dont mind the critique

When irs all going together its brilliant, its really tight and clean, vocals are pristine, but when it gets to the quiter parts it sounds very dry, it should i suppose, but sone delays, or FX, would help fill those parts more. Though as soon as i start thinking about it whoomf, its back into full swing

Great performance and mix, and good choice....mothers little helper next please :D

Yeah, I can wet those middle break parts. But, I'm pretty sure that the fact that it's guitar as oppsed to piano, it will always sound different from the original. It's one of those "like it or hate it" things. This is my take on the tune, and I don't have a keyboard, so this is what it is. :D

But I can see how it might not work for some people that are just so used to the original the way it is.

kcearl - i also found myself wanting a big EMT plate on aspects of this, but after a bit it became apparent he wasn't going for a 'period' vibe. Of course part of it is that I'm a chronic reverb junkie and want to swamp everything in giant plates. I also really enjoyed the drums on this - a sort of hybrid of Watts and a less hyper Moon :-)
 
Yup, its definitely got a modern sound but keeps the vibe, like the background lead during the choruses...Greg did a simialr job on guitars when we did the who cover but his drums were much more moon, Ramis are cleaner and more modern...

Yeah, that's it. I actually have a lot of reverb on pretty much everything, even the "strings" in the soft parts. But I wasn't going for a vintage sound, just trying to keep the same spirit to a certain extent. I like modern sounding drums, there was no way I was going to try and produce this to capture a genuine 60's sound.I probably wouldn't even know where to start. :eek:

I will have to search that out. I don't know that I have ever heard it. I would enjoy hearing Greg let loose :-)

It kinda misses the point nowadays when people get an obviously modern sounding product then soak it in vintage FX

I do the same myself, modern synths with pultecs, fairchilds, emt's then think why did i just add all that hiss, so end up sticking a gate on it :facepalm:
