The next one will go towards autism research. Probably Autism Speaks

I've heard bad things about Autism Speaks (e.g. People with autism aren't allowed to speak at their conferences.) You may want to do some research in who you cut that check to.

Blondie was a full band
Yeah, Chater will hire an image consultant to make her look like 3 or 4 people! I would go see her on her tour with holographic Tupac and Freddy Mercury!

Oh I will. I haven't really looked into it yet. I've decided on autism, but not which charity. Thanks for the heads up.

Chater would look hot as Chris Stein. :D

I know that the usual suspects are always picked for negative examples (Gaga, Speers, Swift...etc) I've done it too at times....but I think there have also been many true music artists that have been mainstream staples for many years.
So talent certainly DOES have a major roll in "making it" and being popular across many generations and with the general population overall.

Seems that often these days there is this misguided attempt to always paint mainstream/mega success as something totally fabricated and devoid of any real talent or quality.
Sure, you get some of that too (that's been the case going back to the '50s - '60s)...but just 'cuz you and your four band buddies huddling in the basement banging away on your "true art" music can't get the attention of no one else but the neighbors and police, ;) while some so-called "talentless product of slick marketing" is out there playing in arenas and major venues week after week...
...you know, it doesn't make it so. It doesn't prove that success has nothing to do with talent and true art.

I think too often we use our own music preferences as the absolute litmus test for what is "good/bad" out there and what is "real talent" and what is just "fodder for the sheep"....but that's not necessarily a valid way to judge. That's just a self-serving argument.
You see that even here on the forums...people simply like what they like and will usually gravitate toward that and ignore everything else or not give it much credibility.

don't agree at all.
First off, I don't hate mainstream music and play it every night. You characterization that critisizing 'stars' is just sour grapes has little merit.

Secondly .... for every 'star' you point out that has talent, I can find a dozen that have little.

And for every 'star' that does have talent, I can find 1000 that had equal or more talent that never got even a sniff from the public.

It's not a matter of musical prefernces because I have none ... I like everything.
Taylor Swift can't sing worth a crap regardless of your musical preferences ........ unless, of course, your preferences run to out of tune singing.

And now I will unsubscribe from this thread since it will turn into Miro pounding away that his view is right until everyone just gives up in frustration.

Dude...you and Greg have been pounding pretty good so far....are no other opinions allowed?

You guys always pound yours into the ground but can never be guilty of wanting to be right...???

Typical.....

You bring up Swift almost ALWAYS....get over it.

The point is that some of you DO have sour grapes and it seems that anyone who is mainstream is ridiculed as a sell out.
Total BS.....

first off ...... I've NEVER said mainstream music is a sell-out ..... never. Search to your hearts content and you'll never find a post of me saying that.
I like a LOT of mainstream music.
I think John Mayar does some great stuff for instance.
And he has a lotta talent.
So you'll full of it if you say that I've put down on mainstream music.

What I have said is that talent isn't what gets you to star status and I stand by that.
And yes ..... other opinions are ok and should be expressed.
But, in your usual fashion, you couldn't just state your opinion, .... no, you had to add in stuff about us being losers in our basement playing our 'art' music with our loser buddies.

Earlier in the thread you stated an opinion and I didn't give you any crap about it ...... I believe I even made a point to agree with some of it.

So your opinion is fine, but the insults aren't and that's how you get anytime someone belittles your secret love object, Taylor Swift.
I use her as an example only because she's a good example.
She's well known and vids of her sucking are easily findable to see it in action.
There are plenty of others.

Except for the minor bickering, I have to say that this thread has been a pretty good read.

Huh?
Where did I say this to *you guys*?
It was a generic comment aimed at the typical garage band wannabees....no different then when you make a generic comment about success, and it being mostly hype and selling out.

I think you need to stop thinking that everything I post is aimed at you.
You do that quite a lot and then get all worked about it. I've given you respect many times...but it's never enough.
If I don't quote you...or use your name...I'm NOT talking to you or about you.

Sorry...if you are going to read in-between the lines and come up with stuff that isn't there...I can't take blame for that.

Let it go man. This is what miro does and it's not worth getting banned over. Don't take the bait.
if he can get me banned for simply disagreeing with him then I'm as good as gone.
I didn't get vulgar or anything else.

and no ..... you've pretty much never given me any respect.
And to repeat, I've NEVER said mainstream music is a sellout ..... and I've NEVER said it was only hype. What I have said is that talent won't get you there since no one knows why the public likes one artist over another.
Yep ...... there's somwe great talent in the mainstream ....... there's also an equal amount of crap.

I'm not trying to get you banned for disagreeing with me...what the heck are you talking about?

I thought we were all having a discussion about the record biz?
There should be room for all kinds of opinons.
I have not specifcally address either of you guy to prove "I'm right and you are wrong"...so why are you even trying to stir up something?

Just post your opinons and let others post theirs.

Is this the same thread I was reading yesterday?

wtf happened??

lol

Oh I will. I haven't really looked into it yet. I've decided on autism, but not which charity. Thanks for the heads up.

Autism speaks its one of the best funded charities...Im not saying anything negative about it but if you do decide to do another charity album I can ask my wife what underfunded well deserving children charities there are...good on you Greg

My albums out next week....Im spending my $10 profit on beer though ;)
