If all you want is to record a podcast 'dry' on the low end go with a USB microphone and on the high end you'll need a microphone, preamp, and ADA converter (all bundled into a USB microphone).

For example my signal chain is a Shure SM7B into a Sound Devices USBPre 2 into a laptop running Sony Soundforge Audio Studio 10 but that's a $1,000 solution.

I'd stay away from a bundled podcast 'solution' and focus on a solid USB mic.

I've never heard of that audio interface before, at least I never hear it recommended anywhere. What's your experience with it?

I love it... love the meters :) no MIDI :(, works standalone as a two channel field mixer with a USB battery, fantastic pres, great converters. Comparable/superior to Apogee Duet 2 and RME Babyface, and FAR more robust. Unlike the competition has no PITA software configuration: all configuration is through DIP switches. A bit more $ then Apogee, a bit less then RME.

Pro gear.

Was having a look at it, seems really good. Shame about the no MIDI though. Is that a big deal with modern equipment these days though? Perhaps that's why they haven't included it?

There's are a number of ways to incorporate MIDI. It's not a deal breaker. Sound Devices primarily markets gear to studio productions and audio reinforcement professionals. They're not really focused on Joe Blow consumer. The USBPre 2 is the bastard child of their 302 field mixer and their 744T field recorder. The meters are unbelievable, and with the exception of MIDI it's one of the most promiscuous boxes I know... it'll interface with balanced stereo XLR in, balanced stereo TRS in, balanced stereo XLR out (line level OR mic level), stereo RCA (consumer level) in and out, coaxial S/PDIF in and out, and optical S/PDIF (TOSLINK) in and out. It has a 1/4" and 3.5mm headphone jacks. Gain up the ASS. It's a sweet box. You can tell I'm a bit of a bigot.

I'm liking the sound of it, since I'm after pretty much the best two channel box for pres and the like that you can get at a reasonable price (aka not diminishing returns money flying out the wallet everywhere). No midi would be a pain but yeah, so many ways to get around it that they obviously decided not to jack up the price any further by including it.
