I started coming here a few months ago when I got back into recording and songwriting after a long hiatus. . . Life's diversions, family, raising teens, subsequent divorce, blah blah, etc. . But my inner need to write and record is a strong one- - an obsession, maybe an addiction. . Perhaps some of you can understand that. . My talents weigh on the songwriting/arranging/producing side of things, and although I've got quite alot of recording experience, It's been mostly by hunt-and-peck trial and error, so I still, after all these years, have alot to learn. .

But I was quite hesitant to hit these boards because most recording forums seem to have a few types of members - -
The Gear Snobs, which I am diametrically opposed to, particularly on a HOME recording forum- - But there are very, very few around here, which is nice.

There are however some Tech-Snobs, who have, or appear to have, an amazing talent for the science of recording, which I respect, but they often seem to be book-smart but socially inept. . . Completely lacking in social skills of any kind, and quite negative in attitude. . Recording can be tedious and detail oriented and may attract that type of person into the technical aspect of it all, IDK. . .

The Skeptics, who feel it's their job to find any and every discrepancy or hole in a members post to "expose" them, when often the posts are intentionally incomplete, or the member are just trying to spare the forum unecessary personal details.

The Troll Caller- - I've been accused of trolling myself simply because I may post a funny or unecessary comment, usually because the subject has already been addressed and answered by people alot more knowlegable (sp?) than myself. . . . I started a thread once that flamed out of control, and never saw that, or the attitudes coming, but I learned a bit also. . .

So I'm kinda bummed 'cause I have a few things to learn, and I really enjoy sharing, but I really don't want to, 'cause it just isn't worth the trouble sometimes. . .

Maybe we all are each of those types at times, IDK. . I do really appreciate the amount of knowledge around here, particularly since, as I stated earlier, my own abilities are not so tangible or technical and are quite abstract. .

But to sum up my rant. . . I love my tape machines, and I love crafting songs, and I want to keep coming here, so can everyone just stand-down, and take a breath, and re-group, and think twice before hitting "submit" ?. . . 'Cause I really have no other place to go where I might learn what I need to, and there's no other place I belong since my gear is all analog. . .

Thanks for reading this. I'm not picking on any one person at all. .. So please don't think that I am. . . We are all capable of being anyone at any time, so let's just be civil and respectful. Thank you ! !

Okay Mr Troll, I suspect there are gaps in your analysis. You probably need to brush up on your recording techniques and your gear is sub-par.

Aside from that, your observations are pertinent, and are always welcome. Sometimes you got a lot of ore to sift through before you find the bits of gold you are looking for.

Thank you. . . I suspect there are MANY gaps in my analysis. . . I just find it disheartening that with all that everyone has in common, the lack of respect is rampant. . . I left out the part where some people feel some kind of ownership to the forum, as if they could own it anymore than the sunshine or the wind that we all share. . . I thought that might start another fight, and I didn't want to come off as being a troll. .. . .

I also suspect that everyone's gear is sub-par to SOMEone . . . (What is the par for home recording, exactly ?. . . I may be close to par, IDK, but it's what I have.)

:D

You know...we have an audio/recording pro coming here on May 2nd to answer any/all questions in this forum:

https://homerecording.com/bbs/special-forums/bobby-owsinski-q/

Soooo...anyone looking for a simple, one question, one answer to something they've not wanted to toss out here on the open forums...this is your chance! ;)

Bobby Owsinski has written a lot of books on audio/recording (Google him)...and I bet many of you have read at least one of his books at some point, so now you can get a few questions in without concern about lengthy debates-n-arguments.

HR is trying to make this type of thing a repeating event, with new pros coming in from time to time...but if few of us members take part, then it won't be worth the time/effort to bring other pros in...so don't miss out on it.

:)

ya' know ....... we have an ignore function. I always have a few people on it when I find them to regularly be jerkwads.
If I'm in a thread where they might have something to say i wanna hear i just clip on "view post".

There are others who, though I don't have them on ignore .... I do tend to skip over their posts without reading them.
It's really not that hard to avoid crap.

After a long time in the music biz though, I can tell you that you need a bit thicker skin.
Whether online or in person, this is an area where you're always gonna run into people who rub you the wrong way.

Just ignore it and keep on keeping on.

I think it's probably less a matter of needing a thicker skin, and more a matter of expectations. . . I suppose I expect some kind of brotherhood of sorts, when in fact it's just a matter of the human condition- - - ego, coupled with the relative anonymity of the internet . . . But thanks all, for reading my rant. . . Mods, you may lock this down now. . I think there is nothing left to add here. . .

. . I suppose I expect some kind of brotherhood of sorts, . . .
well ... that's nice when it happens but there's always folks who don't behave that way.
You wanna see how cutthroat this 'brotherhood' can be ..... try making your entire living at it.
HA! The backstabbing that goes opn over the few decent gigs is phenomenal.

Just value the guys you do connect with in that special way all the more.

Been there. . . As musician and doing live sound, for about five years. . . Gave it up and got a job. . . Fortunately, I seem to remember the good more than the bad. . .

oh ...... I'm not complaining.
I only notice the good and ignore the rest ....... I love it ...... wouldn't do anything else.

Ya heard :spank: :D

I don't know about these "I'm bummed" threads. How about being proactive and trying to steer threads in a more preferable direction, rather than posting one whining about things, lumping people into groups of stereotypes and ambiguously calling them out. I don't mean to be harsh or disrespectful there, but we do need to remember that we're all collectively responsible for the content on this forum.

Personally, I've been teetering on the edge of whether I should be here or not for a while now. I'm not entirely certain I'm welcome. My resolution thus far has been to check in regularly, but try to keep my trap shut unless I feel that I have something of value to contribute.

omg tl;dr squared. WTF is going on in this thread?

I read a little bit - we don't have tech snobs. If you can name one, I'll go burn him with gasoline myself. The main thing that makes this forum enjoyable (as opposed to GS and others) is the lack of snobbery. I saw a bunch of butthurtedness in that first post, too. Dude - don't take shit personally. Nobody else here does, and it makes a really cool dynamic... aside from that - still tl;dr.

You're right. . . I DO agree. . . Sorry folks. . . I just get a bit saddened when folks with a common bond behave with a lack of respect . . . But I'm over it. . . Let's move forward. . .
"I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do, so I leave it up to you."

Yeah, don't worry too much. Now and then a forum goes through a house cleaning stage and after the smoke clears you'll notice an increase in helpful input from those that had been antagonistic and negative. I've been trying to manage the whole psychology of web forums for a long time. There's actually a method to my madness of engaging antagonists and even risking myself appearing like one of the difficult personalities.

Well, it's like my dad told me in 2nd grade. When a bully hits you, hit him back!!! You'll notice I tend to treat abusive/controlling personalities like they treat others, for a time, until it's even too hot in here for them. Just keep that in mind. It always settles down and my hope is that everyone becomes and remains civil and helpful in the long run.

Ato,

I feel these web forums are strange beasts. Posters are often anonymous and living far away from each other. They will probably never meet up face to face. All posters have at their disposal is typed words. We cant see facial expressions, body language and the whole context in which people live.

There's an anarchic tendency in the structure of the thing. The smart ones know they can remain anonymous and so they get away with saying all sorts of things they wouldnt get away with in a properly governed community. Those they attack only get frustrated with the injustice of it and are tempted to seek some sort of redress by defending themselves with more typed words, which usually only escalates the problem.

Some forums demand posters reveal their legal identity and I'm fully in support of that. It's not a complete solution but I think it is a step in the right direction. People have to be accountable for what they say. Unfortunately some people will only act responsibly under the threat of being caught if they dont.

I'm old enough to remember "listservs" and "newgroups" (kids, that was where you posted stuff before the www, you used pico to read those and pine to do email. )

Anyway, I got into a flame war about some thing or another, basically a "young turk" true believer going up against the "old guard' so to speak. Then I met face to face, at some meeting or another, and that was at the same time embarassing, humbling, and wow, that guy isn't some kind of monster enlightening. That was a learning experience for me, now granted also in those days you used me@wherever.zzz and so there was somewhat less anonymity (with your real name) but there still was real geographic dispersity. So act as if you'll meet up with Jinn or Ato someday (Ampex swap meet? analogcon 20xx???) and act appropriately. I try ot follow that rule.

I think you're going to have to put me in the Troll Caller column!
I've been here a couple of months myself and none of your claims are resonating with me.

Gear snobs?
Tech Snobs?
Skeptics?

Puhleese!

Go check out HC or GS...
The folks on this site are generally very helpful,
and there is also a real sense of community (to me).

And you are right about expectations getting in the way,
a thicker skin with a measure of humility is exactly
what's needed on practically any internet forum.

Good luck to you!

Lock'er down mods, we're done here....

Yea - I appreciate you spreading your thoughts out, lol - it really does make it easier to read when you have a lot to say. Whitespace is king on these here Interwebz, lol. Only things I have to add beyond my earlier post is

1. Your avatar is fucking awesome - nobody every gets my Borat references. Great success!!
2. GS still sucks. Can you believe they banned Ethan fucking Winer?! Like... no really - that happened. I've seen people argue with him intelligently, and I honestly don't know enough about the science involved with audio recording to know if his bigger statements are true or not - but... he's a nice guy, regardless. GS was just like "too many people hate your general, consistent and completely unoffensive message... fuck off". Whatever, lol.
3. The mods won't close this thread. The OP can, though - I don't remember exactly how but I think I remember it being pretty obvious.
4. I made my own stupid post tl;dr with #2. FML :D

Yeah, I know. He asked to have it closed, I was being sarcastic.
Actually, I could be wrong, but I don't think HR let's you close your own threads...
Silly.
I would just as soon see it stay open. :p

Looks like you're right. I definitely remember there being a way to do it before....however... I just looked at a thread I started recently and I see no way to lock it. Weird...
