Cool song. I liked it.
The bass playing was good. Nothing adventurous, but tight enough. The tone was a little sterile for my tastes. Performances all around were good.
I assume the boxiness in the vocal was intentional. I thought it worked well in this particular mix.
Drums were OK, but barely OK. A little "programmy."
Overall though I really liked it.

Hi,
I enjoyed listening to the track. Overall it sounds dynamic with a good variation of textures. I very much liked the almost question/answer feel to the phrasing, kind of reminded me of an early blues approach enhanced by the switch in spatial positioning of the vocal, really liked that. It sounds polished to my ear, and at this stage I can only offer an inexperienced opinion in respect of how the track is mixed, but I have a reasonable ear for music and would certainly enjoy the track if included in a listening session.

Wow, thanks for the positive comments.
Agree completely on the drums - my programming is lame and I can only play real ones in a very basic and out of time fashion! I'm starting to use midi loops for a more realistic effect. Not sure what you mean by the sterile tone, TripleM, do you mean the song as a whole or a particular sound, or the overall EQing, or something? Sorry, I'm a right noob, so don't really know what I'm doing or understand everything people say about this stuff. Also, the boxiness of the vocals wasn't deliberate, was just trying to get them balanced in the mix! Not even sure what boxiness means?!?!
Glad people enjoyed the song, though. As with my previous effort, was really starting to doubt it. Guess that always happens when you hear it too many times and progress towards a mix is so slow. I still need to re-record the chorus vocal (those in the posted mix are the scratch vocals I recorded ages ago, copied and pasted three or four times, I haven't got round to re-doing yet - as is probably a big no no, I write, record, arrange and mix at the same time).

Hey Jonny I think the song is nice, I just have some things to point out.
Vocal performance is not great, specially in the chorus.
Make the voice blend better with the song, I think it is up too front, you should take it back a little bit and perhaps add some reverb
Agree with others about the drums, they sound tto robotic.
But other than that I think it is a great result for a second try, really! I like the guitar tone during the solo, it reminds me of this song's solo Miedo - Caifanes - YouTube

Thanks for the feedback, Wally - I really appreciate it! I agree about the vocal - I've not yet recorded a vocal I'm happy with. The chorus was just the scratch vocal I recorded first, but I re-recorded the verses. I didn't know at the time that the sort of response vocal was going to be double tracked - I did record a harmony, but it wasn't really working, so I double tracked another take, lining up as best I can. I would probably re-record again and/or use Cubase's warp function to tighten the double track up more. The main verse vocal is a little weak, in my opinion. I need to work on my warm up routine some, I think. And I also think I perform way better when just jamming with my guitar! the mic adds some pressure, but I'll get used to that, I guess.
The drums are all perfectly quantised and volumes aren't randomised enough. I don't really know how a drummer plays (I play a little, but not well!), so I'm starting to use midi loops installed with Addictive Drums - they sound so good.
As for the guitar tone, that's my Epiphone Les Paul (left handed - it's so annoying being left handed!) with volume and tone all cranked, plugged into my crappy old Marshall VS15R (it's called a Valvestate, but there sure ain't no valves in there), with both gains cranked, through an SM57 direct on the grill, off-centre, into my Roland Quad Capture pre. I kinda like the amp's tone for certain things, but it's a clearly cheap tone and it's hard to get any definition with the gain up. I'm looking to upgrade to a decent recording amp like a Cornford Carrera or somesuch.

Hey Robby - thanks for the response. I guess you mean the rhythms during the verses? I kept them quite low as padding rather than making them a prominent instrument. I wanna work on my compositions to include more interesting riffs/rhythm to beef things up. I think the bass is quite lonely (and not really interesting enough) in the verses. This is a long way from a finished song, though. I guess I'll revisit this a bit later on when I'm a bit better, but for now I've got a new song itching at my attention.

Well there are some great sounding cheap pieces of equipment. As I said I enjoy the guitar tone, Im not a huge fan of SM57, but Ill revisit it after hearing your song. Keep it up!
