Illuminatius Overlordious
Been experimenting with guitar tone - think I got a better sound going now

anyway - I had some vocal track for it but I don't think they were working so maybe I will work up something new

ok finally got some vocal tracks I think I am happy with - how does this sound? is it working?

v4

- here it is without any vocals

the riff reminds me of something - like the cure or u2 or something but I can't quite place it?

v3 - with vocals - these vocals gave me a hell of a time, they still need some work but I think I have the general feel of it.

- lemme know what ya think
v2 - separated guitars / added parallel drum compression

v1

I like the kick, it fit well on the mix. Now, the snare sounds over compressed, maybe you should try the NY Compression "trick" (parallel compression): put the unaltered snare channel and send it to an auxiliary track; then, apply heavy compression on that track (10:1 or more), put some EQ to raise up the lows and his (just a bit); then mix this channel with the original to taste.

Just a question, why have you panned the guitars to the center (12 o' clock)?

Gotta agree with Pixel, sounds very mono with those guitars in the middle. Yeah, the snare could use less compression to bring it more to life.
Guitars sound OK for this style, how did you record them?
Doesn't matter who it sounds like, just do it.

Yeah, I'd say that guitar tone is way better than what you had going. It is smoother, rounder and fuller. Not saying you couldn't improve it, but I'm not really good at super-specific sound comments like, cut X dbs @ whatever number of hz or khz...sorry.

Yes, the riff does remind me a little of some Cure song I think...not exactly though.

I know you were thinking of a new amp - did you get one, or is this just tweaking your exisiting rig?

I think I possibly accidentally routed them to a mono bus - oops - I will check that when I get back in the studio, almost has to be cause there are 4 guitar tracks and they are all panned out.
I will give that parallel compression a go - It's EZDrummer so maybe I just need to lighten the compression overall - but I could route it to two separate busses and try the parallel
- Thanks for the listen

Thanks for checking it out! They are all run through an HT-DUAL into a Laney bass amp and mic's with an SM57

I got my eye on a used Mesa/Boogie but this is all what I came up with after trying different crap in my studio - Heat you should really check out the https://homerecording.com/bbs/caution-shaky-ground/cave/tone-die-338682/26/ Tone To Die for thread in the Cave, it's remarkably civil and actually quite useful - I almost think it should be moved into GTRs and Basses :o

Thanks for the listen

Ok,

I removed the guitar bus, guess I added a mono bus or something? Anyway - also tweaked the drum mix and added parallel compression
the guitars seem to have a little more space now

v2 -

I'm saving these at 256 bit rate mp3's not sure if that makes much difference

Dude that's like ten million times better than your previous stuff.

The compression is pretty heavy on the kit, but the guitars and bass sound way better.

sounds good...I really like the bass tone...got a lot of body...guitars sounds good as well

Id agree the drums sound a bit squashed and theres a one or two timing spots

dont polish up too much, you dont want to lose the energy of your stuff

Aww...they made a thread about my guitar tone. How nice :p.

I am trying to maintain a self-imposed cave ban. Spent a lot of time there during the '08 election - not much since.

I don't have much to add other than you are really getting this together. These threads are awesome, the cave one too.

Very cool sir. I listened to version 2. The riff reminds me of Bowie. Go figure. I like the guitar tones. I like a darker sound in guitars. I'd like to hear it with vocals.

More early new order to me. I'll trade you 2 smiths for a hooky.

I did a road trip to FL a couple weeks ago and I was listening to Low-Life and some Cure stuff - I think it creeped into my subconscious.

I am having the hardest time with these damn vocals man - I might give it another shot tonight

As Greg said - quantum leap matey!
A part from working on the kit compression & a couple of spots where the fills are a little wonky all I'd suggest is ditching the 1 guitar only part of the intro. It sounds too tentative and comes off as if you almost making a mistake. With the bass behind it things sound more certain/purposeful.

Ok, I finally got the vocal tracks to some point of acceptability (to my ears anyway)

I also brought the compression down on the drums some.

lemme know what you think

Thanks Ray - I'm hoping the vocals added will offset that a bit - lemme know what you think

Dood this is really coming together. Great thread. Now - I gotta beg you from the bottom of my heart - get the main vocal centered, commit to the center and stay there, and make it so we can always clearly hear what you are singing. You can have all the doubling, harmonies - anything else you want - but right now it sounds like you, or several of you are literally running back and forth between two different microphones. This song is gonna be cool. You are in the last mile. Take it home...

Yeah - and it took me like 100 takes just to get those vocals down cause I can't sing for sh*t. there are a million punch in things - anyway - it will be easy enough to bring the vocal panning down - I still need to get all the vox normalized and actually I need to redo a few bars - there is a couple timing issues driving me crazy -

Thanks a lot for the encouragement!

I might need to invest in some pitch correction software.

Cool song. I like the feel of it.

Around the end. Like 2:55 there's a geetars part in my left ear that sounds sweet. I'd like to hear it a little louder :D
that's just me though.

Nouveau mix avec des voix est assez bonne.
Tres, tres, tres cool.
