I've been trying to improve my guitar tone and it looks like I am just going to need to invest in a better amp.

I was hoping some of you recording types could post me a sample of good guitar tone :) preferably isolated (e.g. just the guitar track not the entire mix)

This is a sample of one of my latest tracks, it's just two guitar tracks panned hard left and right, I want to improve the tone so I am looking at new amps - maybe you can post me a sample of good tone?

It would help if the track is along the lines of the tunes I am working on - like alt/rock/punk type stuff...

So let me hear some good tone :guitar:

What are you using for an amp now? It's kinda heavily effected and fizzy....just my opinion...
If you browse through my Soundclick GMP link songs - the first 10 are mostly overdriven Marshall JCM 900
(rhythm = Kramer w/Schaeller humbuckers, leads = Kramer or Strat). Mic'd with an SM57...

Have you looked in the "Tone to Die For" thread in the Cave? 102 pages of toneful goodness. :)

I read the first 2 pages and gave up.

Plus it seems that the consensus is something about ear bleeding volume. I need tone from lower volume - my studio is like 12x14' and I don't really want a giant amp that I have to crank up to get great tone from.

Not sure about heavily effected - the only effect on there is an HT-DUAL tube distortion pedal - there isn't any other effect on there - nothing in the DAW and no reverb from the amp- it's mic'ed with an SM57 in the grill of the Fender Frontman 25R -

but anyway - the tone is what I am trying to improve - your tone sounds good on those tracks but I'm not sure how that would sound for my tracks which are a little different style.

arca-dekko, do you have a style in mind? Maybe a band that has a guitar tone you might like to sound like?

That would be too easy.

I guess I should pull up some tracks and give a listen.

The guitar sounds I really lie, I'm not sure if I want to sound like...

I like the guitar sound on Jet Boy by the new York Dolls. Alcohol by Gang Green and X Poor Girl - More modern bands have some good guitar tone like The Hives and The Fratellis.

But it could just be that I like the songs and riffs...

I like the tone on ACDC Dirty Deeds but I don't think that really fits with what I'm doing...

Anywhere I could go to post some wavs or a site that will convert to mp3 for me so I can post some clips?

Audacity is a free program that allows you to save waves as MP3 with the LAME extension.

Ok, I been messing around - I tried micing my Laney Bass Amp with the SM57

Here is a sample of the riff played with 3 tone settings

1) Through the HT-Dual Pedal
2) Playing Clean
3) Playing clean through the free Amplitude sim

think any of these sound better than the first one recorded through the Fender 25R?

They all sound way better. Way better. The first one being the best - to me. I think if you took that first one and cut some of the lows or mic'd a brighter spot on the speaker, it could be a winner.

I'm very familiar with the NY Dolls. They used Fender Twins and Bassmans played loud. Johnny Thunders was a no pedals, all amp, crank the shit out of it kind of guy. You need a tube amp, bud.

word to this.
the clarity of the third with the thickness of the first... if that makes sense

I'm not intending to troll your thread or take it off-topic, but it took some time for the thread to get going -more than a couple of pages - and for the clips to be posted. I really think it'd be worth your while to at least skim it and listen to a few of the clips. There are examples of every kind of tone, from emulated outs, to balls-out 100-watt tube stacks recorded in a separate house. :D

Q: Does the Cave come up in web searches or the new posts list?
I agree that the Cave thread is the best thing since trs plugs,
but respectfully suggest that a separate narrowly focused tone thread here in guitars
is a good idea for the rest of society.

Everyone is chasing the good tone...

We could re-do the tone thread in here. Except dumbish n00bs will flood it with youtube clips as opposed to their actual recorded tone.

I thought the song was really close to the riff, sorry.
I shall desist from posting videos.
