OK, maybe a dumb question, but I've never recorded through an interface, so I don't know.

Do guitar amp/cab sims, etc....work in real time? In other words, can I play my guitar through an interface while tweaking the sims??? Or do you have to apply the ims to an already recorded track?

You can leave them "live" and tweak on the fly. It eats up a lot of computer power though.

For example: You record a direct track with the amp sim on as an insert. Plug straight into the interface, arm the track, drop in the sim, and get to work. With direct monitoring you hear it as a distorted guitar or whatever tone you choose with the sim. You can then play the track over and over and tweak the virtual knobs and mic positions as necessary. If you find something you really like, you can burn it onto the track permanently and turn off the sim to preserve computer power. You're then left with a track as if it were recorded from the amp.

Cool man, thanx. Exactly what I wanted to know.

I wish I could close this thread now before the wacky responses begin. :D

STFU n00b! Dynamics! Do a search! Treat your room! Do what the mix dictates! Do what your ears tell you!

Did I leave anything out? :D

But seriously though, just to be clear....there is no way to somehow place an effect, amp sim, etc...before the Record "head" so that the DAW actually records the amp sim on the guitar WHILE you're playing, right?

There probably is. I've never done it that way.

Here's what I did when I used guitar rig. I did it just like I described above. I'd have a direct take recorded with the sim as an insert. The sound was as if I recorded it through a mic and amp, but it was only with the sim on. When I turned the sim off, I'd hear the raw direct guitar track. I'd then copy that track - sim and all - and mute one to save as like the "master track". With the copied track I'd burn the sim onto the raw direct signal to give me a track like I recorded it right from the amp. As the mix progressed, if I didn't like that processed track, I'd go back to the original and tweak the sim and burn another processed guitar track. With that one main original direct track, I could copy and tweak the "amp" as necessary and re-burn to get a finished guitar track without hogging up shitloads of processor power.

Right. OK makes sense. At least you can play while hearing the amp sim/effect. That's what I was most worried about. I didn't want to have to record a clean track and only be able to apply effects/sims after that. As long as I can hear some kind of distortion/ tone WHILE playing my guitar. Whether I can record that isn't really important. Your method will work just fine.

Yes you can definitely hear it as you record. It would be wongo to do it any other way.

Yeah, it would. But I'm pretty sure I've read a few people saying they record a clean, direct guitar (even solos) and then apply sims after. I never knew if they meant that they're literally recording a clean guitar without hearing what it will sound like distorted. That always seemed just weird to me.

That would be weird. You either misunderstood them, they're lying, or they're some of the greatest technical players ever.

Copy, double, pan, and shift is all you need.
Yup. I know someone who once ran into a guy who knows the cousin of a friend of an engineer's uncle. He said you HAVE to do all those things or you won't sound pro.
