soundcard or not?

No, I do it in 2 steps. I record everything on to the 2488, while monitoring from the 2488. At that point, I'm not really doing any serious mixing.

Then, via USB, I transfer all my tracks into the computer. Sound-card doesn't affect anything during transfer because I'm not "recording" into the computer, I'm just transferring the files, just like I would if I used a disc instead of the USB. Once all my tracks are done and in the computer, I start mixing in REAPER.

I do have a decent sound-card in my computer, but I don't even remember what it is. I bought it for $200 about 5 years ago.
you need to come to Jamfest ..... we would have fun!

Hey back to the OT. I think OP should be more worried about his monitors, as, and not trying to make assumptions but 99% of the people I know who use VSTi's as their main sound sources tend to also monitor on headphones and computer 2.1 systems and in untreated bedrooms through their sound cards, and as an interface could help just as much as a good sound card the money may be just as well or better suited to a good set of monitors or some acoustic treatment,

The other thing that struck me was the word Mac, now, I use a mac at home and at work and unless he has some embodiment of mac desktop soundcard installation could prove painful if not downright impossible. Apple really aren't that fond on you upgrading their products, (except the mac pro's which are handy enough).

So the question is OP Do you have a Mac Pro, Decent monitors, a well taught out control room or are you taking the headphone outs and mixing on headphones? or thru speakers in a not so well treated room?

In the first case I'd suggest a new soundcard definately, in the other instances I'd be more worried about monitors and acoustic treatment.

Guys, he's not recording anything from outside of his computer. He doesn't need inputs and isn't using mics.

What does a sound-card/interface have to do with the quality of his recordings?

Whoops I just kinda assumed he was doing vocals and perhaps other instruments in his beats :D

:spank:

hey guys, thanks for the replies. i have decent monitors, my room isnt ideal for mixing cos its untreated, but i know bedroom producers that are able to make much better sounding mixes in similar environments.

do you guys think i need an external soundcard perhaps, or an interface. id say im basically looking for a means to be able to mix more effectively. if a soundcard can improve the quality of monitoring, then it should lead the better sounding mixes right?

cheer again :)

The American producer Big Chocolate comes to mind... The guy's only 21 and still lives at his mom's house with no acoustical treatment, and he's only using an iMac... but dang, he creates some good music (in my opinion, of course).

jimmy's selling some,

erm... lexicon alpha studio
m-audio fast track (they do a 2 in/out one)
apogee duet

Is Jimmy actually selling some? I hesitated to buy one offline, but I'd buy one off someone I trust, like Jimmy.

I got to get in touch with Jimmy.

Gotta love JIMMY!

Couldn't resist. I'm watchin Seinfeld in order at the minute.

I've been watching Seinfeld in order for about 15 years.

Stay away from the first 2 seasons though. It wasn't really Seinfeld. The characters weren't developed, Kramer was pretty much just a copy of Jim from "Taxi". Season 3 has some good moments, but then they really took off in Season 4.

aye, i see what you mean. I'm on season 8 at the minute I think. Loving it, even though Jerry can't act and it's not about anything. :p

Jerry can't actp

He really can't, but he's had his moments. He does a great job in the episode where George is going out with a Chinese lawyer and Jerry has to act very "dark and disturbed". But, generally he's not great. I look at him like the kind of guy in real life who can't keep a straight face when he tells you a joke. Everyone knows someone like that. Looking at it that way, it makes it easier to accept his "acting". But the writing and the cast are so awesome, it doesn't really matter.

lol, yeah I noticed that, Like he always has a smirk on when he knows he's funny?
Have to admit I didn't care. It's just a great show.

yeah like the tascam us800 or something of the like he bough loads just to sell to HR members

the m audio fast track keeps getting recommended. i just want to be sure that this will significantly improve the qulaity of my sound signal. im looking more for something that will improve my mix as opposed to something that will offer alot of imputs etc.
