thanks ido and rob for the comments on that other thread...I dont wanna say thanks there as I dont want to bump it :o


anyway heres another, first mix and not so experimental...pretty short at under three mins, I guess it'll be the HFs again that will jump out, does the mix sound OK other than that? my vocals are one take distorted, shabby, and the lyrics are daft...but heh ho :D

EDIT: tried some changes and this is a rough draft..any thoughts?






...sorry for two so close together, I was hoping the other one would disappear quicker lol

So, dude. This stuff is awesome. I've been listening to more and more dubstep lately, and your productions are up there, my friend. My critiques are mostly that this stuff doesn't hit as hard as it wants to. To me, dubstep is the metal of electronica. I want it to hit me in the head with a lead pipe - repeatedly. The concept of this song has all the elements of being a stellar dubstep piece, but never quite gets to the point where I'm *feeling* it. I felt occasionally that the groove of the wubs was too - groovy, for lack of a better word. It was a bit predictable. Throw in a really slow single wub in there from time to time to switch things up. Ummm.... For some reason (and this is weird, because I usually feel exactly the opposite of your stuff) I felt that the mix wasn't as open as it could have been. I want this mix to sound huge! It sounded great, but didn't hit quite hard enough for me.

That said, when it broke down to the accordion-type sound, I grinned. That was sheer awesomeness. The reggae singer was in the same league, too - sheer awesomeness. Now, ahem, if I may be so bold... Get to work and make this thing smash my skull in! :spank: :eek: :cool:

hey PI...glad your expanding your electro base :D


problem is that youre prolly hearing more modern brostep or Americanised post-dubstep...skrillex, rusko, caspa...I try to keep my stuff back with the more reggae influenced earlier dubstep, I find it easier to produce, that bro step stuff is slamming...I dont think I have the skills at the moment


Ill have a listen to the mix and see if I can open it up a bit...the whole things is compressed quite a bit so Ill see if laying of that helps and spread some of it out more, I can go and mix up the mid bass and see if i can make it less predictable

Try bringing the vocal track out front a wee bit mote.
 
Hey Henry...Ive vamped it up a bit...Im leaving for texas tomorrow so just trying to get something out there for comments...listen to J and chopped up the verses a bit...hope it sounds better, pressure brings out the best I reckon

I'm listening on decent sony phones and it sounds great. Seems to be a continuation of the evolution of your music in a darker, more aggressive direction. Where'd the carribbean voice come from? That was really your wife at the beginning?...cool.

I couldn't understand much of the lyrics other than the title of the song in there a few times and I think "insanity" and maybe a few other words, but your voice still sounded cool. I think you'd need to do something if you wanted the words to be clearly heard by the listener, but sounds cool as is. My favorite part was immediately following a countdown when it mellowed right out (I assumed it was going to go "bigger" and was pleasantly faked out) and it sounded like there was a melodica in there which reminded me of old Big Youth recordings or other low-budget reggae stuff. Cool.

These phones tend to hype the high end (sony mdr 7506), but through them, it did seem like you could maybe tame the HFs a tad and bring in some more booming bass tones, but I probably shouldn't even assess such things through phones.

On a side note, bro step has to be the dumbest sub-genre name I have ever heard (I understand that's not what this is, but I read it above and in a few other threads here). It sounds like the name for some lame dance done at a fraternity or something. Hope you enjoy the lone star state.

it wasnt my wife, she's delightful...never a witch :D

the reggae vocals were from a sample pack by the ragga twins, who were a popular beat combo in the UK in the early 90's lol, the small bit i lifted seemed to fit in...needs more work though

bro step is exactly what you said...frat boys jumping around like tossers, unfortunately that what a lot of skrillex etc fans are and want, slamming drops after noises that sound like farts panning around a room, unfortunately thats the beast that dubsteps turned into....if that sounds like jealousy... it is, I cant produce anything as close, clever boys :D

melodica...you genius, I got a vintage honner melodica of ebay for $35...I want to use it in everything!

It sounds cool man, but those effects on the vocals don't really do it for me, but the little rap you do in the middle was cool. You got a good voice for raga :D

The new dubstep (or brostep, or whatever the hey it is) kicks my face in, and I love it. If you're trying to make it more aggressive, I think you're on the right path. Happy to help out! :D

my vocals arent the normally the best anyway, there more for effect here ;)

yeah I dont mind the new stuff so much but I guess the phenomena will be short lived...if you get a chance to check out some earlier stuff try Boxcutter, Benga and Scream, Burial...more tuneful less ripping your face off..all good stuff :)


 
Can't listen at the mo. I'm at work. Better Bro Step than Bros Step: you'd have to put bottle tops in your laces for that!

The I like your own vox mate. Processed to the max but that's part of the genre anyway.
The The drop ins from the rastafari were cool too but I've have been just as happy with yours. Mind you - if yu were going all thinks punky reggae party you with War you probably should have namechecked Halle Selassi.
