I am just starting to get into home recording. I have a TASCAM US-2000. In bands I've played in during recording and live on the radio I've used these little headphone boxes where you can adjust your own mix. What are these systems called and does anyone have a good suggestion for a cheap system?

Also, how do they work? Do I need another mixer inline with my TASCAM?

Well, there are headphone distribution amps. On the lower end of the price scale, you can get a headphone amp with AUX inputs. This will allow you to add additional outputs from your DAW to a certain headphone mix. There are better ways to do this, but you expressed 'cheap'. What exactly is it that you are wanting? Giving your current setup details, as well as what you need, as far as monitor mixes, will help to find the best solution. :)

And welcome to the forum dbmfox!

Aviom and Hear Technologies are the popular ones... I think Roland has something too.

In any case, you're looking at initial investments of several $k for a basic rig.

Going to depend on how many different headphone mixes you need.

Furman has something as well but it might be discontinued. It was/is called the HDS16/HRM16.

Thanks for the replies everyone! All the boxes I've seen were blue, for some reason, and had 4 to 6 nobs where I could turn up volume on different track (i.e. guitar, vox, bass, drums). I only said "cheap" because I found a system for like $1,500, which for home recording purposes at the moment is too much. I would gladly pay $500. I'll check out your suggestions though, thank you!

Also, I would only need like 3 or 4 channels... basically drums, bass guitar, and maybe vox if doing a completely live recording.

Guitargodgt...Yes! Thank you! this is what I'm looking for. Still a little out of price range for self recordings, but I'll save up. Thank you!

You know it's much cheaper if you just control it via sends from you daw.

The problem however is your sound card doesn't come with a lot of outputs. But IMO this is what you should do since it's a hell of a lot cheaper than what I suggested.

For anyone else looking for something like this: I just found the Furman HDS-6. It's got the ability for 4 channels and paired with 3 HR-6's it would only cost around $700 on amazon.
