Hi guys!

Just got a bunch of new shiny equipment the other day. Sounding lovely but there is a bit of a hum. This happens with Phantom Power on and no inputs plugged in when I crank the gain.

I've got a Samson C01 Condenser mic and a Tascam US-600.

Any idea what's going on? I wouldn't be surprised it if were dirty power as this morning the buzz is a lot less noticeable than it was last night, I guess we had loads of lights and things like that on.

Here is a sample of the sound.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Matt

That's too high pitch for a ground problem (which is a low 60Hz). SO it's got to be a signal caused by something electrical nearby. Could even be your computer monitor.

Unplugged everything else attached to my PC rig including my Xbox and a battery charger and the noise seems to be gone now. The last problem I'm getting is this really high pitch whirring / buzzing sound and I can't figure out what it is. It's really noticable at high gain so I've recorded it at high gain, but you can still hear it when trying to record.

Please note I know that there is some hum there from my PC, the mic isn't set up as it normally is which limits this as I was just doing a quick demo to show you the whizzing sound.

Here it is. The first 5 seconds are with the mic plugged in, phantom power on, max gain. After 5 seconds it's with the mic unplugged, phantom power on and max gain.

Turn down the gain! No reason you have should have it maxed out. If you have it down at 'normal' levels, do you still hear the sound?

Yeah I should've explained that better. The max gain just allows you to hear it easier. I can hear it at normal levels, much fainter, but still there.

The first part sounds like the mic picking up local noise - computer fan, fridge, whatever. The second part sounds like the hiss of a not-so-good soundcard.
