I just got the Shure SM57, and I have no clue how to make this thing work.
I used to use a USB condenser mic, and I'm using logic pro 8. I read that I probably need a preamp, but I already have an S-mix mini mixer. Is that the same thing? Are they at least almost the same thing?

And once I get it all hooked up, is there some way I need to set it up in the preferences of Logic? If so, how?

MUCHO GRACIAS.

you need a usb interface....then you need to go to preferences and choose that as your audio interface

the samson is just a small mixer...not an audio interface

if you want something cheap try a behringer UCA 222 and connect it to the samson with RCA cables, just dont expect fantastic quality...but it will get you started

well I wasn't planning on using USB, because I know there's another way

If you are hoping to get halfway decent recordings, then you will need a dedicated audio interface; either USB, firewire or PCi card.

Failing that, you can plug the mixer into the line in of your existing soundcard and hope for the best.

One way or another I think that you need a pre-amp for your mic and an audio interface to connect it to your computer. Most popular audio interfaces seem to have mic preamps built in, but they're not the same thing as a mixer. Although there can be some overlap between audio interfaces, mixers and 'control surfaces' the terms refer to different functions.

Audio interfaces commonly use USB or firewire to connect.

[Edit: Gecko posted as I was writing, and he knows more than I do, so his additional suggestions undoubtedly hold true. But the most common way seems to be to just get one of the many popular standard audio interfaces and go from there. You have two problems - pre-amplifying the mic signal, and getting the input into the computer. You can solve both with the one piece of gear]

Line out of your mixer to your microphone/line in input. Crappy sound but it will get you by...

So I ended up just going with the XLR to USB cable. I created the aggregate device, and set up the "device" in logic pro 8 preferences to that aggregate device (just like I did with my old mic), and the mic will record, but it won't play the audio. I'm assuming that it is trying to use my microphone as the input AND the output? How do I fix this?
