Howdy,

So I'm new to the recording game, and I'm having a ton of trouble with my digital mixer. It's a Behringer XENYX USB, and for some reason although the mixer works on it's own, and the computer recognizes it as being plugged in, my audio programs, (Audacity/Garageband/Reaper) all receive no audio input from the device. I have check my system preferences, and my audio input is set to USB CODEC, and even there it appears that there isn't any signal making it to the computer. I have gotten it to work about 50 percent of the time that I use it. And each time it doesn't work I repeat the same steps of getting all of the preferences set to this as my input but, still nothing seems to work.

Please help I need this working in an hour and a half.

Is it always plugged into the same USB port on the computer? I have had problems with some software in the past where I get everything working then next time I plug into a different port and the software defaults to factory settings as it's looking for the device on the other USB port.

Make sure you have it plugged into a rear USB port, not a front one or a USB hub. With the mixer ON, reboot the software. I have found that when I turn on a new device with Reaper, I need to go back into the Options>preferences>devices and just select the USB again (even though it was already selected) to get the signal in/out of my mixer-interface.

Humm... It's okay guys, it was just for band practice purposes, we've been trying to record and the weird thing is that it'll work about 33% of the time, which is a bitch when people have to commute for 30minutes to not be able to get anything done. Yeah and I have an iMac, which was design specifically with recording in mind and now that I'm having trouble with just getting my mixer to work, it's becoming pretty concerning.

Now with that in mind all of my ports are in back, and I've always used the one on the far right on the computer, (which I have had success doing, it just hasn't been consistent.) I have started rebooting the computer, the programs ect.. The computer recognizes it in the USB hub, and if you disconnect it the computer gets pissed and lets you know. But no information sends from the mixer to the computer, and you can hear everything over the mixer, and so I'm wondering if I'm just a jerk who can't use his own equipment, but all of my sends are set on the mixer so... Any other ideas? I'll be checking this frequently until I have resolved the situation.

Just to clarify,

Are you selecting the device in the mac System Preferences for the sound device or are you just talking about the recording software preferences?

The Mac sound device has volume controls, do these effect the USB device before the software volume controls? Are you sure that the mac input volume is turned up?

Sorry if this is too basic, but you always need to start at the simple things first.

Okay so yes I have selected it from the system preferences, however there is not input volume control options in that system preferences menu. Presumably because the board is supposed to over ride that control, but that's conjecture. But to try to make this more clear... The Mac system preferences menu tells me specifically "The selected device has no input controls". But yes, I have gone through all of the input/output controls for the system preferences, and that of the program. The last time it wasn't working, that's what I had to do to fix the problem. For a rundown, the first recording session I did with this it worked perfectly after just being plugged in. The second time I had to change the system preference. The third time I had to change the program preference. Every time I go to use this now, I always check those settings, and they are all set for "USB Codec" (being the mixer) but then after the third time I got it working, I haven't been able to figure out what is causing it to not work. Any other ideas?

OK, Sigh!

I usually use my UCA202 on windows and have never had a problem, used on several different machines. However I use macs all day in my day job. As I am sitting at my desk right now I thought I would try it on my mac mini running Mac OS 10.6.5. Well, it did not work, a strange clicking sound came out of it. Then we plugged it into a mac book pro running OS 10.7.2, it worked first time. We then plugged it back into my Mac Mini using a different port, it worked but only for 2 mins then it stopped and made the clicking sounds again. Back to the mac book pro and it has been working perfectly for over 10 mins.

I am wondering if it has something to do with the operating system version, maybe during mac updates there is a bug which was fixed later?

What OS are you using?

alan.

Make sure you update your device drivers!

The UCA 202 does not use device drivers it uses the standard Windows or Mac audio drivers, which is why I think it could be a mac OS version problem.

Cheers

Alan.

Okay so my OS version is 10.6.8, I haven't been keeping too up to date because I was tipped off about bad things happening with sound software in Lion. But a band mate of mine tried it on a few different computers. A Vista OS, and a MacBook, both failed to work with it, but I would be willing to bet that he didn't do all of the settings right.

And as far as I have ever seen or heard, the XYNEX series don't really use drivers of any sort, it's mostly a plug and play system... I could be wrong though, but I checked the website and all the software/update stuff they had for the mixer was newer version of the open source suit they give you with Audacity and so on.

Nothing more on advice? I'm starting to wonder if I somehow broke the thing.

I just got it to work on my computer again, and yes when it wasn't working I did try it on a windows computer and it didn't work. So I still have no idea what the problem has been. Hopefully it's gone for good though.
