Hi guys i read up on the technique that ive been using a lot lately to help make everything sound more 3d, where take a recorded track, double it, move the wav's on one of the tracks slightly to the left or right, and setting one track panned hard left and the other hard right. Now so far everything sounds amazing in stereo, but now i tryed hearing my mix in mono and phase galore. What im i doing wrong?
thnks

What you did wrong is assume that because you read it on the internet it's not a stupid idea. What you did right is discover exactly why it's a stupid idea. Not everybody figures that out so fast.

The better way to do this is to double track. Record the part twice and pan them apart. It will sound even cooler than the copy/delay method, and it will work in mono.

If those things (double-tracking, etc.) aren't possible -- Doing what you're doing PLUS de-tuning up or down a few cents, modulating one source somehow (etc., etc.) can sound decent -- Not as nice as actually double-tracking done well - But the point is to not have precise sample-for-sample copies running (otherwise, the obvious phase problems will undoubtedly occur).

That is how phase problems are created. Using 2 waves the exact same and nudging one a little bit.
You want to record the part twice rather than copy and paste.

This way your Mix will sound much better in mono and not have as much phase issues.

Ricky Martin uses this technique for his vocals. Slightly pitch shifting some of the tracks differently to the originals and panning.

There are plug-ins that do this and avoid the phase issues.
