Late night jam with myself

So I am pretty new to mixing and I thought I should upload something just to see what I need to work on.

This is a pretty rough jam with myself and yes the drums are MIDI.

As of yet I don't have a bass so I'm using an Electro Harmonix Octave Multiplexer pedal for my guitar along with some EQ and compression.

It's mixed with headphones since I don't have monitors so I guess coloration is a major issue here.

 
You're working with what you've got, that's the main thing. I love the blues crunch on the guitar. Reminiscent of Grand Funk Railroad. Well played too. I like it :)
 
Yeah definitely got a cool vintage vibe...drum pattern sounds like something Ginger Baker or Noel Redding :facepalm:(That should be Mitch Mitchell :p )would play....cool jam man!

the cymbals/overheads seem too infront, and the guitar a little too distant. perhaps back off the verb a little on it and the harmonica. enough to give them space, but not too much that it loses the vintage vibe.
 
Cool jam DB :cool: :-) - agreed the verbs don't match so things sound a little apart from each other.

yeah definitely vintage vibe....its loose but thats cool


i was losing the kicks definition, though good sound for midi drums, and overall the mix is a little muddy...but its a fun track and for being new to mixing its not far off


its could do with a couple of yells in the background...even some handclaps or tambourine just to give it an even liver feel :)

It was my connection. Nice little jam, reminds me of something I'd hear in a small coffee shop jam. Not to bad on the midi drums either. Not sure what drum plugin you are using but have you tried adjusting velocities for the midi hits? I know that seems like a lot of work but it can help bring some "human" feel into the mix. Not saying the mix is bad though. I'll listen again once I get my mini studio back up and running again.

Loved the harmonica, or least I thought that was a harmonica mid way.
 
Thanks for listening and for great advice guys. I have taken all of your inputs into account and started tracking a song (and not just a loose jam) which I will post whenever it is ready. I guess I'm almost halfway through tracking but I seem to be writing, tracking and mixing all at the same time.
 
The bass sounds very mushy - but that'd right given the circumstances.
Nice guitar tone & the keys sound OK too.
Now you've started you need to slowly get some gear together - something other than H/phones for a start & a bass can be had very cheaply.
