So I understand polar patterns, how they work and whatnot. That's all well and good. What I don't understand is what application one would use wide cardioid for instead of regular cardioid. I'm gonna try it out tonight at a rehearsal, but the question remains: When would one prefer to use wide cardioid over regular cardioid?

This pattern combines the advantages of omnidirectional and cardioid characteristics in an optimal manner. To an extraordinary extent the directionality is independent of frequency, which means that regardless of its direction of origin, sound will be picked up free of unwanted coloration.
The wide cardioid is very well liked as a musical instrument microphone. Its sound quality, compared with that of a cardioid, is “warmer” and more “open.”

Here's a blurb from Schoeps. They say it much better than I would have.

"The directional pattern of this type lies between that of the omni and the cardioid and so it is sometimes referred to as a wide cardioid.

The basic idea in designing this capsule was to combine the advantages of the cardioid with those of the omni;

consequently, the bass response of the MK21 is better than that of cardioids and the proximity effect is less marked.

The directivity of the MK21 is only slightly dependent on frequency. This is in contrast to omnidirectional microphones, whose directivity increases with frequency, and to cardioids, which tend to accentuate high frequencies arriving at oblique angles."

Which microphone do you have/talking about?

I bought one of those CS5 from jrasia. The other one will be coming soon.

Thanks for the info, everybody. I'll try recording some guitar, cello and accordion and see how it sounds. :)

Those were a good deal.

I wish that I moved faster on his Avantone CK-40 before he changed his mind not to sell it. :mad: now that is some microphone.

If I somehow come across a grand of disposable income, you'd better be sure I'll be trying to pry it out of his hands.
