Brass Quintet Rehearsal Ideas

Hello All,

I am doing some rehearsals of a newly formed Brass Quintet. All really good players. Average 25 years of experience. Its a small space in my studio. I just want to capture some of whats going as best I can. Given what I have available what are your opinions to record what we are doing? FYI. I am not averse to buying a second mic of my existing mics to make a stereo pair where one does not exist. Just not enough funds to purchase a matched pair of quality mics. I had purchased most of my stuff for Rock and Roll. I have been leaning toward a second AKG.

Mics.
AKG XLII, Royer R101,Matched Pair R0DE NT5,Blue Blue Bird, SM 57s(2) and 58s(4)
Preamps
RNP, Great River ME-1NV,Mackie Onyx Board (4 Channels), MOTU 896 -> Logic, MOTO UltraLite -> Sonar X1
Compressors
RNC, RNLA

Getting a second AKG isn't a bad idea in the long term, especially with the multi pattern capability.
That opens up a world of stereo techniques for you.


Are you interested in capturing the live sound of these guys, or recording them so you can mix and manipulate after?

If the group are well balanced and the room is nice, I'd probably play with decca tree using the royer and those nt5s.

There's nothing wrong with a dynamic mic per bell if you wanna mix it after instead.
 
Ribbon mics can be real nice for brass which add a touch of smoothness on the highs rather than harshness that you could get from Sm58s.

Definitely just capture live. I think I failed to mention I am one of these guys. A trumpet player.

I have not done a decca tree before. I thought you needed all omnis for that. Royer is figure 8 and the NT5s are cardioids
 
Since you already have 4 58's, why not just use those to mic yourselves. Another option you could do would be to just use the royer to record everything to a single track. you did say this was for practice right?

Yehp, you've caught me! ;) Omnis are generally recommended, but I've used cardioid before.

For kicks you could do non matched midside too/instead, with the akg in fig8 and the blue for the centre.

Might make for a nice comparison jobby,.
