Delay With Tempo Of Song?

Hi all,

I've heard that its possoble to set up a delay on lead vox to go in time with the tempo of the song. How would I do this accurately? Any plug-in and setting suggestions to do this well?

Sounds like you want to get yourself some delay pedal with tap tempo. Otherwise I'm sure there are plugins where you can dial in the tempo (in BPM - beats per minute) of the song and it would adjust itself accordingly.

But for live events, it would be best to get a delay with a tap tempo.
 
Yeh, waves delays that I use have options to set the delay in ms or on beats. You input the tempo of your sessions and specify the unit (1/4,1/8,1/16 etc)

It also has a 'free' mode with no snapping and a tap tempo button.
 
I know in Cubase the plug-ins act in sync with the tempo. So if the tempo is 80 bpm. You can have a delay set to 1/4T and there will be a repeat every 1/4 of..... I can't remember if it's a beat or measure or what haha. Maybe someone else can help me out with that.

Thanks guys. I've heard this technique is used in quite a few pro recordings. To get the same effect do I just want the delay to repeat once or should it trail off? I can't seem to get my delay to only repeat once.

The delay I'm using in Sonar X1 has the 1/4T setting as you mentioned. It also has numerous other settings like 1/8, 1/32, etc. What do these mean and do?

I'm pretty sure the following is right, but i do go by ear rather than numbers, so feel free to correct me anyone.


If you're in 4/4 time and at 60 bpm, then you have four crotchet beats per bar; one per second.

If the delay to the session tempo, and tell it to use one voice, at 1/4 note interval, then strike a drum on beat one of bar one, it will repeat it on beat two of bar one. This is one crotchet / one 1/4 note / one second late.

If you repeat as above, but with the delay voice set to 1/8th note interval, then the delay will be 1/8th note / a quaver / half a second.

etc.

I'm pretty sure the fraction is relative to the time sig, so if you were in 6/8, 1/6th note would be one beat of your bar.

if for whatever reason there is that latency when setting 1/4 or 1/8, you can set the "MS" (milliseconds) of what your delay will be and you can get exactly what your looking for. Also allows you to dial in some cool textures, like doing triplets.

This shouldn't be an issue with anything other than pro tools versions 8 or less (non HD of course) every other native DAW on the market compensates for the latency of plugins.
 
Thanks Steen, that explanation is much better than what I read in the Mixing Engineers Handbook. Much easier to understand.

Capt., I'd loves to get Waves Mercury but at 4k it ain't gonna happen.

I love it :) Thanks. Hope it's all correct.

Interesting point raised here though.

I don't even know if the waves delays introduce latency, but if they do I'd assume that waves would compensate.
Now, if you're using PT9 with adv or PT8 without adc, does it know?


I got platinum a while back for about £800. Fully regret it though. I could have half a mortgage paid instead of the constant upgrade fees.
You know you gotta be paid up just to have the privilege of paying for updates?
 
Well your not required to pay the upgrade fees for Waves are you?
 
BTW the delay I have (got it for cheap on an audiomidi.com no brainer deal):

As you can see there is a sync button, this is what locks the plug to the tempo of the track. It's also nice to have the 3 independent delays and the LP and HP filters.

You are if you want it to work.

I originally bought v5 in the late 10.4 osx days.

I paid to upgrade to 5.9.7 which was leopard compatible when i upgraded my mac.

Now I'm on snow leopard where 5.9.7 technically isn't supported. They work with irritating graphics glitches but I'm not interested in paying for upgrades again right now.

Oh okay, so you just have to upgrade whenever you upgrade your OS? I'm not planning on changing anytime soon.
 
Yeah, that's pretty much it.

I usually hold off on OS upgrades, and I do actually know a guy who stayed on 10.4.11 for this reason, but i think that's taking the piss a little bit.lol

There is a sync button on most plug-in delays that matches the delay to the bpm of the song. So use that. If your song does not go to a click track then just play about with the delay time until it suits your song.
