Clam Soup

Project 49
Holy crap - I think I've got all of this uploading/downloading crap figured out.

This is my first attempt at recording myself alone. And it has been a nightmare just to get to this point - but, I think it all improves from here on out.

The song is a dedication to the memories of my grandpa who was one of the last real mountain men. It is a bit "hick" but a good lead guitarist can fix that..... now... to find one of those.

"You should edit your first post with the correct link." <---- thanks chilli. I'd have never thought of that. Fixed.

LYRICS

My grandpa was a mountain man
I remember he used to tell
How he lived his life off the land
And how it treated him so well
He fell in love with nature's song

Grandpa never thought to much of church
But he sure did believe in God
He explained that I'd never have to search
To see that nature really wasn't that odd
He said, "listen to creation's song"

Where the waterfalls pour in roaring cascades
To fill the valleys below
And the rivers sing out their own accolades
Moving in turbulent flow
Where the mountains are shaped in their form
By a force that no man can tame
And the earth has no choice except to conform
To the voice from where it first came

My grandpa was a mountain man
I remember he used to tell
How he lived his life off the land
And how it treated him so well

He'll live forever in my heart
I can see him just as plain as day
When nature sings he becomes a part
Oh I hear the chorus say
Come home to where you belong
Come home to where you belong
Come home to where you belong

I think I got it this time. You can't upload off of your desk top because it doesn't recognnize the shortcut. .... at least that's my theory.

Okay try this.

Okay, so good start. Trust me, my first attempts at recording will never be shared with the public or those whom I call friends.

Are you using any effects on the vocal track? It sounds like there is a short echo or maybe in a small room. If it's an effect, I think you should not have it at the same level as the main source. I also suggest raising the level of the vox track up a tad. With this kind of song, the vox should not be lower than the guitar.

I'd like to hear more of a stereo spread, especially with the guitar. You can do this by tracking the guitar part twice and panning each to the sides, Left and Right about 50%.

You're off to a good start.

Although the vocal is loud enough it has some kind of reverb or something that pushes it behind the guitar. Sounds doubled? Standing far from the mic? The guitar is the focal point whereas the opposite should be true (IMHO). This sounds like a live take and comes across with good energy. The shaker? is a nice touch.

Thanks guys -

I don't think I used any effects on my voice (maybe mono to stereo) on one of the tracks... I did sing over myself the whole way through and probably changed mic settings or placement between the takes just hoping that it wouldn't sound like me ontop of myself - we get enough of that on cable and youtube.

I did try (after the fact) to add some EQ to the guitar to brighten it and then pull the volume back, but I failed.

I'm actually in a pretty big room - tall ceilings. .... but away we go. It is a point of reference to start from and in the end, I will have to redo them probably 400 times.... but now that I know how, that might speed things up.

Agree with the comments above about the guitar/vocal levels, but otherwise good stuff Clam Soup - I usually get bored on songs that are just guitar and vocals, but not this one. Good energy, lyrics and melody I thought

Thanks rob. I usually have other parts in mind for a song - lead guitar/bass/piano etc .... whatever that particular song calls for. "Out of the box" is pretty unassembled, but I try to leave a framework that those other players can crawl all over and fix.
