Boxing up my cabinet?

I got the idea of making a box out of wood and insulating it with some kind of foamy plastic material for my guitar cabinet. I though, maybe it would give me good and consistent recordings. Also, because I have neighbors wall-to-wall it would help silencing my tube amp.

I have a 4x12 and it may be a bit too big to "box up", so instead I though of building a box with one side open, facing the speakers. I've also planned that the "inner wall" of the box (the side that the speakers face) should be easily removable, so that I can easily open up and change mic placement.

Has anyone tried to build something like this? Any suggestions?

Though not state of any art, have a look through this and do a search on "isocabs".
Have fun, mate.

Thank you very much grimtraveller. I read through the whole thing and found it very interesting. The box looks damn heavy though..should be good for metal;)

Brick and mortar That cabinet into your closet. Even if you get a noise complaint - when the authorities arrive invite them in and show them you have no such noise making machine.

The unavoidable reality is this- Mass=sound absorbtion. If it *isn't* heavy as hell, it doesn't work.-Richie

Believe me, the box {both of them actually ! } is heavy. Initially, I was going to put it in the kids' bedroom where I do much of my recording but the thought of dragging it out and putting it back each time deterred me. In the end I realized that wherever they were going to go, that was going to be their permanent resting place. I was even thinking of putting sand between the two boxes for extra mass. But they ain't moving. I rarely say never but I'll make an exception on this occasion.
