How do I fix this issue?

  • XLR to 1/4" might solve the issue, it can be the 1/4" plugin

One of my studio monitors is:

-Buzzing
-Playing at a noticeably lower volume than the other (yes the volume knobs are at the same spot, in the DAW as well)

Troubleshooting, what I have done so far...
-Plugged both monitors in 3 different rooms, same issue. The bad one still buzzes, it did not used to do this...

-Tried many different cables, I even switched the cables between both monitors. And the bad one was still playing lower. 1/4 in to 1/4 in

I'm at work, and I dont remember the exact model, but it is one of the M-audio studiophile series.

So... Just to make this thread more fun I added a poll. But written opinions are more than welcome!

Sounds like your monitor is busted to me. I've only had 2 experiences with busted speakers, and they were exactly how you described it. I may be wrong. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Buzzing and lower volume symptoms make me think of a bad lead. But if you've swapped leads and you are still getting it, maybe it is the connection within the monitor itself.

Sorry Im not sure exactly what that means, but if by active you mean it plugs in the wall, then yes its active.

I just got home, its a M-Audio BX8.

Really weird, I just tested it again today, and the volume is fine, no buzzing. I am so confused right now.

Sorry, I was thinking that you might have one active (with the amp in it), and the other passive, connects to the active one - you hadn't specified what you had. Like gecko says, might be a bad connection? Either a bad cable, or the jack itself - or something internal.

ya, it works fine for the first 4 hours, then starts buzzing a bit. very weird how the problem is on and off

It sounds heat related, you will need to get a tech to have a look at the amp there is a component on the way out or a bad solder joint.

Alan.
