What's your definition of a Poser?

to quote Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray fame; "...for a million bucks, I'll play anything you want..."

...or something like that. either way, I'm a poseur/poser

Gerg pretending not to be a Ramones fanboy to look cool for CJ Ramone would be a poseueiueyr :D
(The correct spelling of "posaeuioauioaeuioaeuioaer" is P-O-mess-ton-of-vowels-R)

CJ was cool and I didn't try to hide my fanboi-ness. His fucking custom made Mosrite bass was drool worthy. Actually though, I was more interested in talking to his guitarist - Daniel Rey. Daniel Rey was a longtime engineer, producer, collaborator, and general behind-the-scenes guy with the Ramones long before CJ joined the band. I had about ten million Ramones specific in-the-studio questions for him, and he answered them all.

IMO all bands need to have a little bit of poserishness about them if they're playing live. It's showmanship. Otherwise you get shoegaze bands that stare at the floor and have no fucking stage presence or energy to the performance - I've literally fallen asleep at gigs with bands like that playing.

Last year at bikeweek I was doing the afternoon shift and one of the biker bars at they had this band pulling shitloads of gear out of several trucks.

I asked the bands' name ... they told me .... I said, "Where ya' from?" .... they were from here and when I said it was odd I'd never heard of them their reply was 'Oh .... you're gonna hear lots about us!"

They set up 4 times as much gear as was needed for the gig and were on a constant info commercial about how this guitarist was the second Satriani and oh man ..... they're singer was so awesome and ..... "Could we have a little more room here .... we've got TV people coming in for a video shoot" ....... "yeah ...... your Mesa Mark V is aight but our guy uses the latest Line 6 rig and it's the most awesome amp there is ".... :D ....etc. etc. And they were dressed to a T and has their moves down ...... even though I know about that shit they even had ME kinda looking forward to hearing them. They had a lotta really good gear (except the Line 6 amp ) and made an impression.

So came time for their set .......... I left before the second song was over. Guys ...... they SUCKED!!! I don't mean simply not good ..... I mean epic suckage so bad that it was hard to believe it wasn't a joke of some kind. Out of tune ...... terrible sound even with the good gear ....... terrible vocals ...... possibly the worst I've ever heard including H.S. beginner bands.

Those were posers.

Ouch - that sucks....around here the worst part is vocals suck for HS bands. If you can find a singer you're "golden" as they say.

I don't care for the Ramones, but being able to chat it up about production must've been AWESOME!

I just wonder how the heck that sort of thing can happen. I mean, that little show represents some SERIOUS outlay of cash, for gear, bookings, etc. Where does the money COME from?

Hey Lt you leave my band outta this discussion.

It was. I was most impressed by how much he and they simply didn't care much about the overly technical aspects of recording. He really stressed the point that the "Ramones sound" was simply how they sounded. There was no magic or prep. They just showed up and knocked it out. I asked a lot of questions about Johnny's buzzsawing guitar sound and his set up. "It's all in his right hand" was his answer. "We'd just stick a 57 wherever in front of his amp and he did the rest." Johnny Ramone was obviously not a technical player, but NO ONE sounds like him, and a whole genre tried to, even still to this day. I saw a quote one time from Johnny himself saying basically "I could play any guitar through any amp and it will always sound the same". Awesome. :D

well ..... we don't know they had many bookings but I'm gonna guess it's a buncha guys with decent day jobs playing at their dream of being rockstars.

if you meet someone or hear somebody say "yeah...I play guitar or I'm in a band" within the first minutes of a conversation.

a poser.... isn't that what you're supposed to call someone with a better job than you?

When i was playing in a band years ago it wasn't hard to get your foot into the door of most local places. If you had decent fanbase and swapped gigs as openers with other bands you could get the word out on your band.If you want to step up a level though it'll always become about business and money and a lot of places are pay to play nowadays.

If you're an out of town band you have to pre sell a certain amount of tickets so the club owner don't loose his a$$.I've personally never paid to play but did play for free quite often.I have a day job so i was in it for the fun but it's nice to make a couple dollars.

I flew out to the Milwaukee Metalfest about 8 years ago. Most of the bands there had to pay to play. You submitted your demo and if your band was chosen it cost $1000 and you got 20 minutes playing time. We're talking about the unsigned bands of course. The band i remember most though were'nt posers, the guitar players were just idiots.

Paid all that money and didn't bring back up guitars.Murphy's law kicked in and voila~bad guitar jack for the one guitarist.Guitar was cutting out and he couldn't use it.The other guitarist didn't have a back up either. They took turns using the only working guitar and each played 2 songs. There was the band's 20 minutes of fame and each guitarist had to stand there looking like a douchbag.

Not poser: Simon Townshend (Pete's little bro). Strictly a rhythm guitarist, nonetheless he was great (last night in Boston with Roger Daltrey performing Tommy+). During Tommy he was switching guitars every song (sometimes during songs, too): Telecaster, Strat, SG, Ovation acoustic, electric mandolin, a dreadnought acoustic (brand?) and a 12-string electric - anyone know what brand it is, sort of a reverse-Jaguar body, (2-sided head, not Fender)? His guitar tech was working his ass off!

Poser: the "lead guitarist" for the band. Sorry, don't know his name, but he also functions as the musical director. Obviously, you don't need to do any extraordinary lead work for Who songs (Pete T never did), but this guy was doing the stage-front poses, and things that always strike me as so fake.

When Joey went for the spandex pants with the Tshirt & leather jacket I was worried that he was ttruing to become a poseur/poser but then again they wore leather jackets, hair & a corpporate image so that was poseur for seur. BUT they didn't pose on stage except for the Johnny "STANCE" & that was more about maintaining balance whilst attacking a guitar with such ferocious & uber quick downstroke only playing.
MOST guitarists who make a face, step forward, shake their locks, shred etc are on show but I usually like a bit of a show unless I'm listening to some "hey man" music & then the pictures on the inside of my eye lids did all the work- but that was then & this is now.
Then again, standing studiously/nonchalantly whilst playing a blistering rip is a pose of sorts isn't it?
