Do people ever do this?

I was thinking if someone were to record a vocal take autotune it and then use some sort of midi converter the vocals could be turned into a software instrument/music notation making it easier to sing in key. Is this ever done and it there an easy way to do it/name for the process?
 
This is entirely possible... but how would it help somebody sing in key?
 
i feel like if u had a backing track playing the notes you should be singing and the actual notes you should be singing it would at least help let you know when your not in key, is there any easy way to do this or is it a complex process?
 
I find that putting something with clear chords in the monitor mix is the best way to keep people on pitch, assuming they have that skill in the first place. I've recorded simple whole note chords on a piano for singing and playing bass to when there was nothing yet tracked playing chords. Then I deleted the piano and tracked guitar in its place later.
 
Play it on the piano.....seriously though, you have to get a good ear for music to tell you whether you are in or out of pitch. People sing better with a guide track but eventually you need to sing it with just chords (no backup melody) as this forces you to sing without support.
 
Melodyne will do this for you. It can output a midi file from your vocal track.
 
sounds like a good idea, actual auto-tuning is cheating. But using melodyne might be a good middle ground to make a template of the vocals. Obviously its not super difficult to follow the chords but if the chords are fairly distorted it gets more difficult. Also the vocals dont always follow the chords strictly.
 
When I have trouble hitting certain harmony parts - I play the part as single notes on a keyboard (let's say a piano) and then have that track high enough in the mix where I can sing to that part using it as a guide to where my vocals note need to be) - which helps me hit the harmony part.
 
P-I-A-N-O...not to be rude but...every good singer has a good ear---you can't have 1 without the other. If you know the note is wrong, you fix it. If you don't know that the note is wrong---you find a better singer. lol You don't have to know how to play the piano, the lead note is really all that should be required unless you are getting into specific harmonies that you want duplicated...and it would be easier and more uesful than that science project you mentioned. lol Although if it works really well, you could probably get a patent and sell it to all the major labels.
 
I just got a TC Helicon Voiceworks yesterday and the harmonies it produces gives you instant feedback on how out of tune you are. Whether you want it or not. When you're in tune they sound awesome. Drift even slightly and the voices retune into something not so nice ...
