Tascam 488 not playing/recording

Hello,

My TASCAM 488 MKII is not allowing me to play or record for some unknown reason. The tape unit can still fast forward and rewind. I've tried different tapes with the same results. When I press PLAY, the mechanism starts to move into the tape but then backs out. The PLAY light goes on and then off as the mechanism goes in and out. Again, everything (that I've tested) but the PLAY and RECORD functions are accessible.

If anyone can share an idea of what might be happening or what to check for, I thank you very much for your input.

Have you tried cleaning the pinch roller with some rubber cleaner?
Sometimes, this could be the reason why it will "retract"".
Are you using type II high bias cassettes?
 
I haven't tried that yet but I will! And yes I'm using high bias II cassettes.
 
I had the same exact problem. It was the motor. I also had the belt changed as well. It cost me about $125. I also found that only one place (at lest that we could find) has the motor. Good luck.

Try mainelectronics for the motor EG530KD-2B, which could be helpful should you decide to get it fixed, or do it yourself.
