Hey guys, so I have a little bit of money, and I would like to upgrade my vocal recordings (or what I use to record them anyways), but I just cant decide. Currently I use an AKG 3000 into my firepod, and I get alright results. The question is though, would a Sm7b or a Golden age have a greater effect on improving my vocal recordings?

Thanks, Drew

Sm7b IMO. I just picked one up today and recorded vocals. Huge improvement over the NT1a I was using for this particular singer. Raspy voice was way smoother.

I heard it needs a ton of gain. What pre was it going through?

60db + is what the manual said was needed. My 1641 just barely gets this so I threw it through a crappy ART TPS2 'neutral' setting and it sounded great. The TPS is a pretty noisy bugger but it was completely useable for the heavy rock I was tracking to. I'm not sure it would be useable for acoustic stuff by any means. But we are not talking about the preamp anyway. Mic was smooth with very controlled sibilance. I used just the small foam windscreen with a metal pop filter right on mic. Even plosives were controlled with this mic. I am in love with it. For now anyway. :D

Jimmy you think that would be good for me? All I hear is great things about that mic

I have the GAP and it is really nice and has a really good vintage sound.

But, I would bet the microphone would be a much bigger improvement to start with.

I think if you can only get one, get the mic. The preamp will make a difference, but not nearly as much as a good mic will. Once you have the good mics, then the preamps become more important. And, I think most stock pres will get you 60db these days. Some max at 50db, but you should be fine.

I think that may be my next purchase. :D

My infatuation was much like the wicked witch of the west and the ruby slippers! I stopped at nothing. Flying monkeys and all!

Take a look HERE Jim. At both the Golden age pre73 or the Chameleon Labs 7720.
Both are just GREAT stock but they also do mods to them.

Then push them to 50db and record at a lower volume. It should be fine. Instead of maxing out the mic with the pre, you'll be 10db low, but it should sound fine.

Those in the know, please correct me if I'm wrong...but for years I had a crappy interface that couldn't get above 50db without crapping out and I just set it as high as I could without a lot of noise and boosted the volume in the DAW. I know that messes up the signal to noise ration, but it wasn't bad to me.

Well its official. Im picking one up today for $300. Hope Im not disappointed :)

Yeah sometimes its better to record lower on a noisy pre and just bump up the volume in the DAW.

The mic. A guy I know has a setup very similar to mine, and he gets insane results with a sm7b, so I figured I might as well start there :). I might be kicking myself later for not going with the pre, but it will for sure be my next purchase (that is, if I can hold off on buying all the little nic-nac things that for some reason I cant stop buying :D).
