Hi, I'm hoping someone out there can give me some advice on some straightforward simple to use and preferably not expensive s/ware that will enable me to record song ideas. I'd like the s/ware to be able to allow me to add drums (from the programme, not a traditional drum kit), and bass, covert to MP3 and then share with the other guys in the band....I'm not a techno-phobe by any means, but I'm just being honest, this whole side of things is new to me! Thanks, IH

Audacity is a free download. Cubase Elements 6 $140. It's a limited version of Cubase 6 ($500). You can download a free Cubase 6 trial for 30 days. Reaper free to download and try, $40 if you like it.

I have never really experienced a problem with it so don't know, plus it has a option that reduces the graphics of the daw to increase cpu efficiency.

It will also allow you to freeze tracks once your happy with it while you work on another to help reduce cpu usage. This basically mixes down that track into a wave for a temporary period until you want to unfreeze it and continue adding effects or tweaking that track.

Sounds pretty good.

I keep telling myself it may be time to learn Pro Tools but haven't discovered any limitations with the software to make me switch yet.

I downloaded the 14 day trial version over the weekend and it seems very powerful and user friendly.

It seems to have a "Garage Band" kind of vibe going on. Seems fairly intuitive too. SERIOUSLY considering making the investment.

I'm glad you like it, a lot of people shy away, thinking it is limited and small fry, but I have to say I think it's vastly under rated. It's made my journey into music production so much more pleasurable.

Currently using a older version of N-Track and have tried Reaper and Audacity and can't say anything bad but, Mixcraft 5 is a pretty good investment for the money as well. I've checked out their Tech Support board as well and they truly do seem to respond to inquiries and resolve problems quickly.
