Recording high gain question

Hi. I've been using a Sansamp GT2 pedal and I've gotten a nice high gain tone. When micing it, there's too much hiss and fizz. I've tried different mic positions but nothing helps. I'm planning on buying a high gain tube amp (Bugera 333xl). Will this alleviate the issue or there something else I could do besides lowering gain and layering a bunch of tracks? I'm micing it with an audio technica 2020 and pre amping with an art tube MP project.
 
What happens if you turn the gain down? Would that make the fizz/hiss go away? I'd try that before spending more money.
 
a new amp is always a good idea :)

but I'll bet you can get a good sound by messing with the amps EQ, and distortion, and mic placement. It's not something we can tell you here, you just have to play with it for a while.
 
I'm curious...what exactly are you miking???

You mention the SansAmp pedal, and then you say "when miking it"... :confused!:
 
Ah sorry. I run for the sans to a processor where I clean it with a pre then to an old boogie (veautiful clean but not much gain) then to a marshall jcm 800 cab. I've experimented with mic placement and eqing to no avail. Gain is fizzy through the mic. Would a sure 57 make much of a difference?
 
what processor and what clean up?

you might get better results just getting a tube screamer or something like that, or a boost to drive the old boogie. I think the problem may be the sans -> processor - > amp...I don't think the sans is supposed to work that way. I'd just get an OD pedal or crank the old boogie till it distorts. which model?

Think the Boogie may be an old mark 50 watt. It doesn't list the model on front or back. It def doesn't have the modern boogie mark gain. I'll try the sans without the processor. I have a boss OD I can put in the chain. Was thinking about getting a tube screamer when I ordered the Bugera.
 
I tend to use less gain when recording compared to playing live. I usually bump it down 2-3 notches!

just run the OD into the boogie and mic it. Skip the sans and whatever processor for now.

The bugera will have a nice distorted sound, and a tube screamer is something most guitarists use so, it won't be money wasted. That way you'll have the Bugera, the Boss, and the TS for three different types of overdrive. Also, the TS can be used as a boost to drive a slightly overdriven amp.
 
Did you turn off the cab modeling in the Sansamp? Cab modeling > a guitar cab sounds like ass. Sansamps sound best IMO going direct. That's what they were made for.
