Hey guys, I'm working on a project with a friend and I'll be doing vocals on it. I don't sing much and was just wondering if you have any tips on how to warm up and simply sing. Thanks.

Humming works well for a warmup, actually. Hum different notes throughout your range and hold the individual notes for awhile. This has the added benefit of making you less 99.999% less gay than most vocalists during their warmup routine.

The older I get, the truer some very old singing advice becomes to me: namely, relax. I spent 15 years in a band screaming at the top of my lungs, and if I had to do more than 3 shows a week, it wasn't going to happen for that 4th show. I'm 41 now, and while my range should be less than it was in my 20's, I find the opposite to be true. As long as I relax, I can cover more ground more accurately.

So I guess what I'm saying is try humming and smoking pot.

Lip trills are pretty gay but it does work.

Cool, thanks guys! I hear about singing from your chest a lot. Not exactly 100 percent sure how to achieve that but I feel I'm doing better at that part. Anyway, I'll give the suggestions a try and see how it works.

^^^^ This part right there^^^^ is world class advice. :laughings:

There are tons of tips, and it's really best to try a lot of things and see what works for you. About 7 years ago, I started doing quite a few shows with my daughter, who is a much better singer than I ever was. Anyway, it was different than playing in bars...for one thing, she was 14 when we started, so she couldn't really get into bars...but it was more of an Americana/Folk Acoustic thing anyway, so we played a lot of coffee houses. Seems like everywhere we played, whenever I'd ask for water, I always got this room temperature water served to me. I never complained, but after about a year of this, I asked a lady why she gave everybody else cold bottled water, but gave me luke warm tap water. She told me that's what most singers requested.

I'm not most singers, but I say try it, lol. Honestly, I do better by drinking about ten cups of coffee, but I don't seriously recommend that any more than smoking kush.
