Hi, i used to have an old Arp Odyssey synth that i really regret selling many years ago. Was looking on ebay for analog synths and see that they have gone up quite a bit, and can't afford what i'm looking for. So.... my question is, can anyone out there recommend some good, inexpensive, software and interface that would work with some of the newer synth sample software? I mainly play guitar, but like new stuff to play with once in a while. Thanks for any help.

I'm not completely sure but I think you're asking for a multitrack recording set up, that will interface with something like Reason (which is sample based)?
If so, have a look at this series. It's written for people exactly in your position. There's info on different recording software, and interfaces with an overview of their quality vs cost.

If your looking for a new piece of software that will be good for building parts up with synth samples, then maybe other people might be kind enough to make a suggestion as I'm more of an engineer than a producer myself ;)
My first place to look would be something like Reason, which you can digitally plug straight into the back of software like ProTools to get it all recorded. Or indeed, have a look at the virtual instruments in Pro Tools, some of the synths that you can get or come included, are genuinely excellent!

A lot of DAWs like Cubase, Reaper, Sonar etc. allow you to play VST instruments like virtual synths - I don't know if they make an odyssey - man I had one of those bad boys myself in the late 80's - I can't beleive what they are going for now! I think I paid like $200 for one - now there like what $1500? some crazy shit - ARP is a monster

there are a lot of great free and inexpensive synth CST simulators out there - lots have arpegiators (cant spell i know)

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Found an old copy of cubase 4 with a lexicon alpha usb studio thingie that i haven't had time to play with yet. I figure thet if i like playing with the stuff i'll move on to Reason or Protools sooner or later. Also, i thought that with an old version like Cubase LE4 someone must have posted some free plugins by now. Yep, i miss my ARP, but have made due with a Roland GR-1 guitar synth and lots of wierd effects pedals and racks. Thanks again. Enjoy life!

Cubase 4 is great - that's what I use all the time. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is you can't export to MP3 - so i do a WMA for wave and convert it on audacity...
