It was all going great until I explained to her that I was going to hang some acoustic paneling here and there on the walls in the bonus room. I got "the look," and now I have to be creative or suffer.

I figure if I can find some paneling with attractive or artistic images on them, I still have a shot. I've seen the RealTraps "Spouse Friendly" line, but it's not friendly enough for my spouse.

Anyone have any other suggestions, or should I just give up in despair?

Place hooks where you want the paneling, when the studio is in operation hang the acoustic paneling. When the studio is the lounge / bedroom / guest room / games room / etc, take down the acoustic panels and hang some nice prints selected by the spouse.

Put her shit out in the rain and kick her to the curb.

The "bonus" room? What's that? Does she have one?

Back when I was married I had a deal with the wife. If I spent a grand on a guitar she got a grand too. Everything cost me double but it preserved harmony. Get her a bonus room of her own, buy her off or do what c7 said. I don't have much hope for a relationship where "the look" has so much power.

Let your wife paint the panels herself. If she isn't artistic, then you need to let her find an 'artist' friend who can paint something on the panels. This isn't about what the panels will look like, but about letting your wife control that aspect of the room. If it's her handy work, then she'll be happy no matter how atrocious the panels look. And you won't care because they'll function the same whether it's picasso or elmo painted on them.

As it is in all good spousal relations, the trick is let her think she won.

The bonus room is an 800sf or so space that isn't a bedroom. It's fully dressed out. We keep the toys and stuff up there, its got a great view of the lake and the hot tub, and since its over the garage it's OK to be noisy.

Our deal is she gets a chair, I get a guitar. I'm pretty satisfied with that. I'm also perfectly happy to put whatever decor on the panels she likes. I just can't find any panels that she'd like. You guys that enjoy living with Rosy and her five sisters, I'm sure your plan works out fine for you. I just gotta find something decorative. Any help, or are we going to spend all our effort telling each other I'm whipped and you're lonesome?

Absolutely. I don't care what they look like, I just care about where they're hung. I'm just looking for a source.

I found some interesting fabric for panels in our front room that turned out really nice (considering me and 'color or 'art means i'm using a ruler!) Did stained frames..
Then i sort a petered out and the rest of it is.. just this side of Tolex if you get my drift.
But.. She has an SWR rig next to the gobo in the 'dining' room (former.. no table no more.
So you see.. :)

Not lonesome here. My wife does what she wants and I do what I want. We've been together over 10 years and have never once got into the tit-for-tat scene. That's just immature bullshit. My wife encourages me to play music whenever possible.

Way to be a compliant hostage.

It's possible to roll yer own panels and cover them with whatever fabric the person-who-wears-the-pants-in-the-family will accept.

I love it when married guys assume us single guys are lonely or somehow not getting any.. not to rain on anyone's parade, but I am single, in my 30's, and get far more action than any of the married guys I know who are my age. If you are talking companionship, yes you could go either way but this assumption that we all need rosy and her 5 sisters is false.. furthermore, I see it all the time, wives making EVERY decision for their husbands. They just shrug it off because it is easy... well what happens when you get lazy and let the dog up on the bed all the time? He/she will sleep there all the time. I'm not comparing women to dogs but once you set the precedent, expect the same response..there comes a point where you have to stand up for yourself, a bit of alpha male goes a long way! haha  How anyone could be against simple acoustic panels is beyond me.. they double as protection for kids banging their heads off the walls in a play room. The hooks are also a good compromise .. to me it sounds like nothing you find will appease the wife because simply put, she doesn't want ANYTHING on the walls. Time for a sit down Soprano style if you ask me! Good luck..

Well regardless of who wears the penis in his house Jerome has gotten some fine suggestions on decorative acoustic devices. What will be truly miraculous is if he ever comes back to post the outcome.

She grounded him from the computer lest he start getting all uppity and demanding his balls back from storage in her purse.

seriously though couldn't you stretch a fabric aver acoustic foam without affecting the sound deadening qualities?

Absolutely. It's done all the time. It is the concept behind the decorative panels you can buy as linked above.
