Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and i have a question. I'm a drummer and i want to start recording my work. I currently own Sonar Home Studio 7 and a Samson Q1U Dynamic USB Mic. The software is perfectly fine, but this mic just doesnt cut it. Basically i want to completley mic my drum set in this configuration: 1 mic on the snare, 1 mic per tom, 1 mic on the kick drum, and 2 overhead condensers. I do not have a mixer or anything of that sort. However, my software acts as a multi-track digital mixer. Which brings me to my question, how can i connect XLR mics to my computer? I have come up with this diagram that i think will work but im not sure. Thats why i am here. Please tell me if this will work

Mics > XLR > XLR Female to DB25 pin > DB25 Pin Female to USB > Software

Will this work? If not, what do you think will work? (im on a budget of about $250)

Thanks!

You need some kind of interface that has 8 inputs to take all those mics. The interface goes between the mics and the computer. You could go for a mixer but though it could work well, that would be an unnecessary complication as you'd still need an interface. The only point in having a mixer would be if you had a 2 or 4 input interface, the mixer could be used to take more inputs but then you'd be kind of limited because you'd have to get the mix of what's going in absolutely right beforehand and you obviously want flexibility.
Someone more knowledgable than I should be weighing in soon with more specifics and better detail.

Ok, i see how that works, but wouldnt i need 8 channels as opposed to 6? Sorry im sure i sound completley stupid but i honestly have no idead what im doing lol

Also would this mixer work for use with an interface?

Yamaha EM 200 (Sorry i cant post links yet)

From what i understand, this mixer can only record via an aux out to a reel to reel tape deck. But if it works i can get it real cheap from somebody i know so that would be good.

Don't get a mixer. Just get an interface. You'll want 8 individual inputs. There's dozens of them out there.

Ok ive found an interface that might work, but its FireWire and I have a PC. If i buy a FireWire to USB converter, will it work? Thanks!

theres no such thing...if your PC doesnt have firewire see if it has a spare PCI or PCIe slot and buy a firewire card of fleabay...theyre not expensive

M audio fast track ultra is USB2 and has eight line inputs in the back. I got mine for just $300 USD

I have a mac though so I dont know if the M audio works with PC
