Howdy. Be patient please since this is my first post.

I goof off playing with some friends in a band, and we decided to have someone record, mix, master a few songs for a demo. It was done in someone's home studio (don't ask me the exact board, and software because I don't know).

here's what I do know about how each instrument was recorded:
Guitars - dynamic mic in front of amp (not certain what mic)
Vocals - dynamic mic....I think SM 58
Bass - direct into bass head...not certain what head
Drums - 2 dynamic mics in bass drum, SM 57 on snare, 2 SM 58 over my shoulders horizontally

Feel free to rip up the recording setup, but at this point it is what it is (I believe there are some flaws in the drum recording setup, but I am a drummer and am sure that may be the iceberg's tip).

My question is about mixing and mastering. I think some things are off in the mix (bass seems low on volume, harmonica in 'gameday' is loud, guitar solos are loud, some of the guitar sounds a little scratchy in my opinion), and maybe some improvements can be made with the mastering.

The link to the songs is in my signature. Take a listen, and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

M

nope. You're not done mixing. Mastering wont "fix" any of the things you listed. The good news is, you already know what you need to fix lol. Most of your issues seem to be volume related, so you can just adjust levels. If you arent happy with the sound or tone of guitars, your best bet will be to re-record them. I'd probably try and bring the drums up a bit more and add a bit more top end to the cymbals- they sound kinda dead.

My typical method for mixing is to record... mix in the studio, listen in the car/house stereo, make a list, remix... repeat as many times as necessary.

There's an MP3 Clinic section on this forum which is the better place to get people to listen and comment on your songs.

Guys, thanks for your inupt. I'll check out the MP3 clinic, and we'll go back to mixing what we have.
