Drum tracks and the grid

Hello everyone! :)
Assuming everyone records now with the aid of a computer -- the question is: how close to the grid do you try to lay your drums tracks? Besides other things -- in terms of metronome clicks -- what's allowed measures criteria? At what point do you decide that it's good enough to move manually a few things here and there, or you have to re-record the whole thing?
Thanks for your answers!!! :)

A good drummer can play along to a click, or not play along to a click. Guys who swear by one or the other either way are usually retards. A good drummer doesn't care either way because he can handle it either way. If you're just sitting in your room recording one track at a time - use a click track. If you're recording as a whole band, then maybe don't if you don't want to.

As far as editing, that's up to you. How bad are the fuckups? Small timing variances from the "grid" aren't even usually noticeable once the bass and guitars are locked in. It's not really out of time if everything is out of time, right? Massive flubs should be re-tracked via punch-in or just do the whole thing again. Don't go cutting up a bad fill trying to fix it. Just re-do it. It will be better in the long run.

Agree with Greg, especially about tracking it right instead of editing. Although whether I feel a click track is necessary or not depends on the genre of what is going to get recorded.

Don't make the mistake that so many do in "assuming" what "everybody" does. Life's more exciting that way.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. :)

Don't get offended at stupid stuff on the internet. Life's more satisfying that way.

Amen to that! :D

I wasn't offended. I was being protective !
I did get offended once, though. This kid had a T shirt with a picture of an aeroplane on it. Scandalous !

Why? Bad experience?
In case the plane crashes.

{Maybe 'scared' is a bit of an exageration. Let's say 'watchful & cautious'. I've flown many times but it's not my favourite pastime !}

I am all the way with you on this one. :) Pastime?... I see it as torture!!! No, thanks. I would rather drive, making stops for a nice meal, seeing a country side and so on.
