Get out of that "booth". It's the worst recording environment you can be in. Get into your main room. A small "booth" will sound like a box, because it is a box...and blankets only make it worse.

When pro studios talk about "booths", they're talking about a room bigger than most home-recordists main room. I think the word "booth" throws people off and they imagine a phone booth or something.

On top of that, blankets are horrible for sound treatment. All they do is kill some highs, which ends up making your low end an even bigger problem. This might be why you feel a need to back up from the mic. A "booth" and blankets is a recipe for an audio nightmare.

Hey thanks man...I had no idea about any of that, and actually thought the complete opposite. Someone else had mad a similar suggestion up closer to the top so these new vocals are recorded outside of that stupid "booth"

I think I just fail at vocal mixing haha.

It's tough man, I find vocals equally hard to record and mix to any level of satisfaction. I guess that's one of the differentiating factors between recording professionally and at home on a budget!

After I read what RAMI wrote I realized the vocals were still lacking. So 1 cup of coffee deep, I banged out new vocals in a different room, different volume, and they came out great. There wasn't any time to warm up but they came out so much better. Mixing down and will post them shortly.(AGAIN)

Robgreen - My issue is that I have the HARDEST time judging them. Maybe its because its MY voice? I'd like to think I have an above average ear and know the difference between a good and bad mix, but when it comes to my own voice I have a hard time. I don't know why...maybe I end up focusing narrowly at the vocals (ie the syllables, tone, etc) instead of the big picture.

Awesome!

We all have that problem. I hate my voice most of the time and usually mix it too low (in most other people's opinion) also.

Sorry, I feel like all I'm doing is spamming :spank: but anyway...

In those last mixes you just couldn't hear each word clearly and that's been addressed. I'm actually really happy with these mixes :)

Edit...I wouldn't say these are absolutely the pinnacle of perfection, and I'm sure I'll revisit them in a week. I'm just working on a self imposed deadline. Most importantly I've just learned so damn much in the last couple weeks that I really can't wait to use it on my new tracks. A lot of you guys are to thank for how much I've learned. Thank you, and happy Thanksgiving btw!!

Vocals sound way better on these. Nice work.

Hey Ryan,

Just had a listen to some of that stuff, and I reckon the issue you are dealing with..... (maybe its already solved), but it sounds very familiar. It all sounds massively familiar, and I've actually found out through vocal coaching that it was my lack of ability with regard to my breathing and sustaining a constant level whilst singing. After that, there is also using a compressor/limiter on the vocal track to keep the levels constant. Then after the final mix, using a good compressor on the mastering will help also. Of course, budget constraints can hamper the last two parts, as the really good digital and analogue ones are pretty pricey.
