I'll have to do a barber shop quartet competition in a live setting and was trying to decide on which pair to use in an X/Y configuration through the PA and a feed to the video and audio recording.
A pair of Shure SM81s or a pair of Shure KSM137s?
I can't seem to make up my mind. I'm leaning towards the 81s. Unless someone has a better idea.

The SM81's are VERY directional. So unless it's a small group and you have some distance from them, or just one mic per member, they probably wont do you. The SM81 is a common mention for choir, but for the pair I had, I had to put them at 45 degrees to each other just to have a 90 degree stereo image with enough overlap to seem like a stereo image. Good mics, but maybe not ideal in that configuration.

OMNI, whatever ya got, havr them do acouple songs and move them off the mic accordingly. If they.ve been doing it awhile , they probabaly already mix themselves

Quartet (4) people at a time and the x/y pair will be maybe 4 feet away from them. So maybe they will work?

Hey Big Kenny .... My first concern will be the live sound portion of this performance.
Will Omni still be the best advice? For I'll want the greatest amount of volume before feedback.

Can't speak for the 137s, but the sm81s sound great on vocals. I would try x/y, then nos or ortf at farther distance and see which works best (if you have a chance to test). In a live setting, omni may give you audience coughing, talking, etc.

That's what I'm afraid of with Omni that and feedback possibility problems.

I always like NOS or ORTF over X/Y while recording but this is going to be very different with the live sound.

This is going to be in a large area (two full tennis courts at two stories high indoors) ~ but I can test in my shop that is 60x60 two stories high.

I always felt like I needed 4x SM81's to have a 180 degrees of soundscape. NOS would probably work pretty well with them. I don't know if you can do 90 degree X/Y, there might be a void in the center. They are that directional IMO. You'd have to at least mix part of R in L and L in R to make it more binaural in post. It might also depends on how they setup. If they spread out 1+ yard between bodies or shoulder to shoulder?

Pretty close almost shoulder to shoulder.I'm going to do some test tonight.

Just spent about 5 hours doing shoot outs and the best sounding ones so far are the Earthworks SR69, Followed by the Shure 141s then the Shure 137 and lagging in last place are the SM81s.
With a bunch of others that sound progressively worst that aren't even in the same ballpark as these.

Well last nights show went off great nothing but complements from everyone!
And believe me they were picky.

I used the Earthworks SR69 in an X/Y configuration for the quartets and only needed 2 SR69s on the other stage for the choirs ranging from 30 to 90 members.

All going into a Midas console into a Klark Tecnic 31 band EQ ..... A matinee and an evening show 600+ in attendance at each one.

Glad things went well MS. How far back did you place the SR69s on the choir?

Hey drumslinger for the choir about 6 to 8 feet aiming towards the middle rows chest area. With the X/Y on the quartets closer maybe 3 feet and aimed at the upper chest area so as the film crew wasn't at a fail with sight lines.
