Dogbreath

Im an ex-spurt
I've got a 2X15 cab and plan on using my old Sunn 200S 60 watt tube head. The head has a 4 and 8 ohm out.

My plan is to wire em in 4 ohm but it's been a loong time since I've bought bass speakers.....I was lookin at JBL's Eminence, Pyle. Jensen etc and I'm a little out of my element. Too many choices and not enough savvy on my part. :)

Ya got any preferences? Why?

Much thanks.

Well, I'm partial to the JBL's (D140F, E140, K140) of course, but the Eminence 15's are great speakers too.

yeah ...... 60 watts ain't much so a decent pair of Emminence would do fine.

What are you gonna be doing with this ? 60 watts ain't much .............. I wouldn't consider it enough for gigging on bass, you'll run out of headroom the minute you turn it on.
:D

Cool. Thanks gentlemen. ;)

LungsDude....My cab is just 2 15's. I've got no tweeters. I suppose I could snag some, cut some holes in the cab but have no idea how to wire that in.
Aand...those are the exact speakers I was checkin out just this morning. :drunk:

Harvey...good to see ya :D
Much thanks man. Gives me some more directions to check out.

Peace-n-shit. :)

Yo LT baby! :drunk:

This'll be just for jam practice at my house. My buddy has a 4X10 GK head and cab he's lettin me use for giggin.
Ya reckon I should bite a bullet and just buy a whole new set up? Head and cab?

:laughings:

well for just jammin' it ought to be fine.
Do you want me to push you to buy a whole rig?
'cause I'll do it ....... I'll give you a reason why your wifey needs to let you have a new rig.

For example ...... did you know that men with small rigs have ........ well, small rigs?

yeah but it's a BASS rig.
We do it deeper. (ish :o)

:D

The amp I'm runnin thru now is a Fender 1X15 100 watt SS. It does ok but that's about it. I gotta push it pretty hard and really don't like doin that.

Maybe I outta be lookin into the whole she bang a little more than I have been.
I have plenty of checks.

I like some juice in my bass rigs. At LEAST a couple hundred watts and that's not really enough.
I got a SWR SM400S off ebay for $250. It does 500 watts into 4 ohms and my Ampeg SVT410HLF is 4 ohms.
And it never seems to have too much power ..... really, just about right.

So yeah .............. let's get you a rig.

It's not totally out of the question. hmmm...that's gonna lead to more questions....
I googled your set up and that looks pretty sweet. Can I have it? :)
Seriously thinkin the set up now.
See what you started!

:laughings:

Yeah, but guys with huge stacks are just compensating.:p

uh......um...:o

I knew I was spending your money as soon as I said it!

:D

Yeah, I love my rig. It's really one of the bestest bass rigs I've had.
Fairly compact and really potent but especially, it gets DEEP which I need since I'm a 5-string guy. Serious bottom end coming out of that cab.
It's actually one of the few bass rigs I've had that other musicians comment on how good it sounds.

You can have it for an undisclosed amount of cash.
:)

EVM's to me are the best. Extremely efficient. Able to produce a tremendous amount of frequency reproduction.

Take a check? :D

I think I'll go ahead and speaker up my cab for now and keep my eyes peeled for a new rig.

Thanx man. ;) I'll look into them too.

TONE TUBBY SUPERBOY 15

This one is, I think, actually cheaper if you get it directly from Tone Tubby.

Weber now has bass speakers also. But nothing beats the EVM15L.

You got 60 watts driving 2 15" speakers. You should be looking at real low powered speakers mate, or you won't power up the voice coils properly. I'd be looking at Radio Shack or the like. Look for home speaker drivers, you aint gonna find current 15" drivers for bass that even light up at 30 watts. You should be looking at about 50 watt capacity per driver.

A good rule of thumb, at least for older gear, no idea on the new stuff, is that the amp should top out at about 60% of the capacity of the speaker cab. 60 watt head, 100 watt speaker. QED.

JBL speakers were very efficient and required very little power to produce very loud sound levels.

A Sunn 60 Watt tube amp, with two JBL D130F's (or D140F's) was an official Sunn option back then, and a pretty common setup. Here's a review from Harmony Central:

"I have owned this Sunn 200S cabinet since 1978. It was purchased used @ Leo's in Oakland, Cal for $500. It was built in 1969. It has the "issue" grey basket D-140f's reconed in 1978 as K-140's. This is a legendary cabinet used by the likes of Jack Cassady, John Entwistle and Felix Pappalardi. The Rolling Stones used 'em as monitors at Altamont Speedway. Brother Berry Oakley used D-140's as did Phil Lesh. IMHO one of the best all-round bass cabinets ever made.

Cabinet has 2 15" JBL D-140f's mounted vertically with a center port. It is referred to as a "bass reflex" cabinet. I gave one to my guitarist who loaded in 2 D-130f's and it is the finest guitar cabinet I've ever heard. Loud, yep, sparkling highs, yep, piecing to the point that other guitarists demanded to know how many 10" speakers are in it!!

Sound Quality:

Flat response from 40 Hz to 'bout 4 Khz with the issue JBL D-140f's. With the D-130f's installed more like 50 Hz to 'bout 15 Khz. Hi-Fi sound, nearly. Hard to go wrong with JBL D-140s or D-130s!! As a bass bin, projection to 30 yards easily. One of these will kick the stuffing outta the over-rated SVT 8 x 10" which BTW is a DEAD BOX! Approximately 130 Db of SPL @ 150 watts R.M.S. at 10 feet."

operative word in your post, were, operative word in mine, current. My bottom line, with 60 watts of amp power you don't want to load your cab with 800 watts of speaker (see above link).

probably not unless you want to make sure your cab is ready for a better head down the road.

Buuut, it won't work worth a shit with a 60 watt head right now. If that's what's sought, well, you know.
