I currently have a pair of JBL LSR4328's and the JBL LSR4312 sub.

I'm looking at re-doing a few things, but I'm wanting to put a bit more emphasis on speaker placement - but I need to get some stands I can put behind my desk.

I am looking at the Sound Anchor's STUDADJR (http://www.soundanchors.com/page9.html) - however it's a bit more than I'd like to spend at $565.

Max height I need (at the base) is about 35" Lowest is 28 - 30". There are some stands, but they only do every 4" - I'd like to be able to adjust it.

Anyone know of any options?

cinder blocks. :)

seriously.

you can paint em if ya wanna make em look nice, they're fairly heavy and they're cheap.

I heard of one dude who put thick blanket material in between each block but not sure if that's needed.

:)

Yup! I've seen this more than once and works very good for what they have usually they have wooden floors and helps to isolate.

Cinder blocks here, too!

..only I didn't paint mine. I just covered them with black king-size pillow cases

A friend of mine tried and tried to suspend his but just couldn't get them right. I suggested heavy nylons just slip them in and then angle to taste :D.... but I think he just gave up and purchased store bought ones for that's what he has now.

Yeah...I had my second pair hangin from chains mounted in the ceiling. Been hangin there for about 3 years. And the other day at jam, one of em fell.
Thankfully, I had a bunch of gear stacked up underneath and it only fell about 10 inches.

I'll be going with cinder blocks now.

(wrapped in black pillow cases ;) )

I hope no cinder block manufacturers see this thread. The price will triple.
:)

I'd like to know why on earth they cost $500?..........

check out homestudioguy.com

He has step by step info on making monitor stands for around $10

Just a thought...

Are you going to be able to have the "equilateral triangle" listening position with your monitors behind your desk?

my monitors are behind my desk

I spent about a year and a half hanging at the Jade Elephant on Grace Street in Richmond, so I'll believe anything you say!

I guess we need a little terminology check here...

I was thinking in terms of having the monitor stands between the desk and the wall. So I guess it would probably be best described as in front of the desk, although it might be considered as behind the desk.

In that case, it might be necessary to widely space the monitors to compensate for the additional distance from one's ears to the monitors' plane.

Having the monitors behind you when you are sitting facing the desk would not necessarily pose the same problems. However, I would hope you would turn around before doing any critical listening...;)

That's what I'm trying to do.

My desk is just that - a desk. Nothing is blocking the speakers.

Then you should be fine , But don't have your speakers up next to the wall you'll have to pull everything away from it.

I used cinder blocks, then built MDF columns, filled with sand with a wet-suit time material top and bottom, and now I them suspended from the ceiling using aircraft cable, a plywood saddle and a piece of 1" RFG underneath.

freed up some desktop space for rack gear (mainly patchbays)... cost me ~ $16 at the hardware store, some scrap ply and RFG with some cloth covering

fortunatel the ceiling joists were in the right place

and I have the JBL monitors as well

Ah yes indeed, by behind my desk, I mean between the desk and the wall. They don't seem super far apart, i think like 50 inches, but my desk isn't that big. My secondary monitors actually are behind me, but I spin around when I turn those on. They're even further apart because they are halfway across the room.
