And, to the OP, as moresound eluded to, the Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies by Jeff Strong is a good read. That's where I started..... (not that it got me very far, but others have benefited from it)

Exactly!! read, study, read some more and experiment with your knowledge thus far then advance from there. Baby steps at first but after a while you'll be flying.
My favorite saying is ..... "It takes about 10 years to become an overnight success". ;)
