For the Fast Track yes it is a good idea but the mic u would rather get mxl 990 than rather a beringer coz the 990 has a good sound quality than beringer
. and on top u need at least studio speakers, m-audio Av 40 would be good for a start.

the Behringer would probably be a far better mic that the mxl990 for vocals

try a mxl v67g if you get a chance, can be found for under $100 and is a very good vocal mic for the price

I'm with KC on this....the V67G is a good mic. Especially at the $$$

MXL? I'll have a look at that
Do I need monitors now? Can I not just use headphones for the moment and later on get money to buy those?
Thanks for the advice

yes you can, do you have headphones? if not id recommend ATH M40fs, not expensive and very flat sounding...but again the 990 is not a good vocal mic the v67g is

The Behringer B-1 doesn't have the greatest reputation, even though its made by 797 it doesn't seem to stand up to other 797 mics. The Studio Projects B-1 on the other hand has a great reputation, not only as a vocal mic, but a general work horse mic as well.

As mentioned, the MXL V67G has a very nice sound for a low budget mic.

There's been a lot of talk lately about the new MXL 2003A, but I haven't personally heard it so I can't give an opinion. Others have.

(And yes, stay away from the 990. Anyone who says it sounds great hasn't ever had a decent condenser in their possession.)

And to stretch you money further I'm sure you can find these items on ebay and similar selling sites used for cheap, cheap. ;)

The M-Audio Fast Track is not well liked from what I've seen. But the Fast Track PRO has gotten good reviews. I have an older M-Audio Mobile Pre and it's serviceable as a first or need some odd type of connection type interface. And a few others, Edirol (cakewalk / UA-25), Emu 0404, and probably some I'm forgetting at this point that do well as well. Sound devices just released an update to their USB interface that looks promising, but quite pricey too.

As far as quality of the mic goes. I see MXL990 and MXL991 combo packs up on craigslist for $50 all the time, for both mics, hard case, shockmount, just bought this yesterday at twice that price, yadda yadda yadda. Which I can only assume means that it wasn't well received. And it's still a terrible market to be selling. So you're better off getting something that you're less likely to sell at this point.

The Behringer B1 is overly bright and screechy. Explore some other options. Some MXL mics are ok, or a lower end offering from Audio-Technica would be nice.

I would have to say the best 100$ mic is the Studio Projects B1. Really really really nice sounds.
