Should the Guitar & Bass forum be split?

  • Yes. We need a separate place for acoustic stuff

    Votes: 10 24.4%
  • No. It's fine just the way it is.

    Votes: 21 51.2%
  • No Preference

    Votes: 10 24.4%

  • Total voters
    41
  • Poll closed .
It's a solution without a problem. Sad thing is it's been driven by that dumb survey. Twenty good and true members asked for it so it must be needed. Just check the more recent and accurate poll for confirmation as if any were needed..:drunk:

yuck, those subforums in the pic above just look way too cluttered. keep it as is i say; i'm afraid of change. :D

Where is the Hurdy Gurdy forum? Just kidding, leave it as it is.

Alan.

Hammered dulcimer forum, nuff said. And I do know someone who has a hammered dulcimer BTW.

Careful now! When I said that it didn't go down too well! But then again, you are way more awesome than me.

The poll says 2:1 in favour of keeping things in one place, can we change things back yet?

The active thread - Guitars & Aging - has veered into cymbals and other stuff. It's a good thread but like many is a bit free-ranging. There is probably not much on the ground evidence for continuing a separate forum regardless of what the survey results may have been. It's not going anywhere. If you want to give it another chance make it a full-fledged forum not a sub and see if it establishes a following.

That thread would quite probably have have more input if it had been posted as per the old board. Mind you that might not have been a bad thing.:)

It consists entirely of established members in any case so it probably shouldn't count as representative..

FWIW, I am a new guy, and I like them altogether, as I enjoy skimming threads, and you never know when you will learn something new when it is not really expected.

If it was split, I would likely miss out on some stuff. From what I have seen in my short time there really are not a ton of new threads daily, so I see little benefit in splitting.

Baldrick voice on: I've got a cunning plan.

Voice off, why not simply start a forum for classical instruments?

I guess we split - this whole thing happened when I was spacing off, but I had no preference. Now that the deed is done, should we rename this forum to be "Electric Guitars and Basses"? And should we move the annual humidity sticky post from here to the new acoustic forum?

Ah yes, thanks for reminding me.....will do!

Just to explain, since the poll results were very close (those that don't care, I counted as 'yes' for this purpose), I decided to give the split a chance and see if we get some customers.

It really wasn't close...it was more than 2-to-1...against. :laughings:

Normally...you would NOT include the "don't cares" in a poll decision since they *don't care either way*... :)
...rather than use them to push up either of the other two choices. :spank:
If anything, you would split the the
don't cares" 50/50 and add them equally to both of the other two choices...which still leaves it...against!
But whatever... :D

(Are you doing any political polls for this year's elections in the USA? ;) )

Well...now the next "logical" step is to also split the Guitars and Bass forum, as they are TOTALLY two different instruments.

I think the decision should be made based on the volume of the board. If the Guitar and Bass board has twice the average daily posts as other boards, then a split is justified.

Generally it is best to err on the side of simplicity. Fewer categories usually means easier to use. Unless one of those categories grows disproportionately huge.

Just my opinion. I have administrated a few forums in my time :)

Wait, twice as many people would prefer to keep things in one place but you go ahead and split anyway? Sorry, but this is beyond stupid. You could just as easily count those 'No preference' votes as 'No' votes, in which case those voting against the split would outnumber those voting for it on a 3:1 basis. If you're just going to go ahead and split, why maintain the pretence of a vote?

:laughings:

Seriously Chater-la, this bit is a problem.

(those that don't care, I counted as 'yes' for this purpose)
How can you possibly make that leap? Especially as it was me that suggested you include that option in the first place? I didn't have it in mind that you take all those responses and lump them into the "yes" vote to trump the inevitable majority that said no....

I fully understand your attempts to move the forum on an up, but do you really believe that a/ there is a need for a separate forum? b/ That need was asked for by the membership? c/ There will be enough traffic and posts to sustain two separate boards?

I really have no dog in this ring, I didn't vote, but I really think you need to take a more measured view no matter how well meant your efforts and intentions are. Your argument and actions at this point are just flying in the face of both the active membership and reason.:o

Good point. Also the tunings and temperament thread?

Having said that, the effects of humidity is greater on acoustic instruments so if you have to pick put it there or if it is required I'll write up a new thread for both with guidelines for both.

Mutt, your points are valid. I used the 'no preference' votes to swing the ongoing preference at AF for an acoustic forum. Having said that, if the forum does not pan out within say 2 months we will revert back. I just wanted the acoustic forum to have a real shot as it's own forum before we close the book on it.

I'll move the threads in question. Thanks again!

Just as long as we have established that it was voted against by two to one with as many having no preference as wanting a change, and that it also goes to show that those 20 replies to your original survey were not entirely valid.

Seriously just go ahead and make the changes you see fit. Please don't try and justify them as user driven.;)
