Just taking the piss, feel free to ignore if you like:

"[W]e all know guitars get better sounding with age, and part of that aging process is being subjected to string vibrations that act upon the wood and entrain it to respond sympathetically and in with more euphonic sound."

Ha, that's wild. You gotta wonder. I can't wait to see Mutt's take on this.

Part of the source quote (not included) was the notion that vibration at a given frequency would train the material to resonate at that frequency. Of course this gets rather complex when you combine overtones with an equally tempered system . . .

Well I don't know about that but I've always heard that the vibration of playing acts on the grain of the wood and acts favorably on the tone. Guitar voodoo. I never knew if it was real or not. I know I can't tell.

Theoretically, I believe it works. I've played vintage guitars same make, same era. One played heavily, one like a Closet Queen. Both sounded DRASTICALLY different.
And Those were ELECTRIC guitars.
I hold the same theory for guitar pickups. Vintage P/Us that have been played sound diff than unplayed NOS. I've install P/Us for clients of both varieties over the years. I can't quite explain it, but it seems to be true....

Can you provide a source for that quote. I like it..

Your name isn't Pete is it? First name Victor?

Why you wanna go all VP on it? :D

Regarding actual scientific analysis of materials resonance, how would this be done with something like a soundboard? Contact transducers, or is some sort of actuator employed to set a string in motion? Or is either typical?

It's been done in many ways with a variety of simple and complex equipment. The last serious research I was involved in was using a load of state of the art FFT stuff. I've done some pretty involved research with just basic chladni plate stuff. It all depends on what your abstract is and what you want to examine.

It's not about the gear though as you can do some pretty decent analysis with basic gear. Just like the music that all this stuff makes the real key is not the gear but the mind that manipulates and evaluates it.

I'll be yer Huckleberry!

Cool, FTR

VP was/is an old friend of mine. His handle here was Victory Pete and he became known as VP, you'll see his name used here because he is legend as far a dumb stupidity goes. Your post that started "Theoretically....." put me in mind of him. ;)

Well I'm glad in wasn't my Dumb Stupidity :D

Not at all. I've seen you post here in G&B before and pretty much all of it has been solid observation. On this topic though if you'd said "IMHO, I believe....." I'd run with it, but when you say "Theoretically, I believe it works...." I can't stop myself challenging it regardless of my level of understanding. It's just that sort of thing VP used to litter every post with. Ask anyone....:D

How 'bout if I just declare my statements as my own personal empirical observations? ;)
