Overdrive pedal in front of FX processor

I have been using a Zoom G7 guitar process for 2 1/2 years, and I'm finding that a third channel could come in handy for solo-ing boost, especially when playing certain songs that have both clean and crunch.

Is there any reason why I couldn't use a Tube Screamer, Blues Driver, or other Overdrive pedal in front of the unit to kick it up a notch ?
Yes / No ?

And in case you're wondering ... the Zoom G7 has a 12AX7 tube in the pre-amp of the pedalboard. The amp I'm using is an early 80's Roland Jazz Chorus JC-77 (80 watts)
 
Dunno why not. I use a G1x as the last stage on my guitar pedal board and always have other pedals in front, Muff, Rat, DS1, SD1.
 
Yep same here. I use multi-effects pedals in conjunction with many different types of stompboxes. I don't have any problems at all.
 
If you want to sound like total dog crap then go right ahead. That type of pedal was designed to overdrive the front of a tube amp. Overdriving the input of a solidstate device will result in clipping and you will get the sound of bees in a jar. The Zoom G7 has 80 patches so how could you possibly need a "third channel"?

I thought the G7 had a tube pre-amp ?
When I was all Boss pedals + a few others, I had a Zeus Preamp pedal after the crybaby and before all the others in front of a solid state Marshall. It took the amp from heavy distortion to Holy F*** distortion, like you wouldn't believe. But it was a noisy pedal after one hour of battery. It died in 99
I guess I will have to experiment.

No it has a "toob" preamp {starved plate}. It has a tube in the circuit but it's not a typical tube preamp like a real tube amp would have. You can bet that most of your distortion is coming from op amps and diodes rather than the tube.

Thanks. I got hosed on that feature.

You're from Temples of Syrinx ? Ironically, it's for old 70's Rush tunes I'd like the extra boost with an overdrive pedal. I'm using a modified KingTone patch, spent a lot of time fine-tuning the delay to match 2112 & Anthem. Wah was replased by Phaser. I use a real 70's Crybaby.
 
Alex Lifeson didn't use alot of overdrive, maybe compression but not overdrive, even live in concert. He also used to record 4-6 tracks of guitars to thicken up his sound, Later on when he discovered Chorus he would throw in a Boss Chorus Ensemble to thicken the tracks up even more. I think back in the early days from the first album until 1978 he used a big muff as overdrive for solo's and he always used a volume pedal for quiet parts and volume swells.
 
Does the G7 have an effects loop?

I run a Boss GT-8 on stage every weekend. None of the overdrives impressed me, so I started running a TS-9 Reissue (sometimes followed by a Voodoo Labs Bosstone fuzz) in the effects loop. Better than what's inside, and it does what I need.

Just something to think about.

G7 has no FX loop, G9 does. Thanks for the suggestion.

You're the 3rd GT-8 owner who hates the distortions.
GT-8 and GT-10 ... so much for every Boss pedal inside the box :spank:
