Having read the "can't sing" and "can sing" lists I have been intreagued by the question: what makes a good singer.

There are plenty of great singers out there that are at the best of technical ability, However there are probably more people out there who have never touched proper technique but can really get your heart racing. There are loads of singers with a massive range who take your breath away, and those who can sing nothing more than a two note rumble but really make you feel those notes.

So what atributes do you think it takes to make a really good vocalist?

Here's the attributes I'd go for:

* has a sound/style/attitude that fits the song and the band

* draws me into the song and makes me want to listen

* isn't boring :eek:

Paul Rogers - if you listen to how he ends every line of a song, he tends to cut off notes in a very cool way. How you end notes is super important.

John Lennon - I've never heard anyone sing with as deadly, spot-on pitch as him. Almost not human. His name usually doesn't come up when people think "great singer" but to me he's about the best I've ever heard.

Good analogy Dinty.

Pitch is probably a good requirement.

Vibrato as required not overdone.

That's two I can think of....

The rest is pretty subjective, as is all music...

Absolutely, along with a roadie girlfriend! (for the sub cabs)

Also, he's got to be able to harmonize:

Although some would say not being in tune is not disasterous if you have feeling and attitude, I'd add 'being able to hold a tune without needing studio trickery' to the, surprizingly small and not much commented on, list.
