Need Expert Help Diagnosing Microphone Problem

Loud Sun Studios
here the skinny.....
It's a Sony C-48.
It sounds great for a while but suddenly cuts out completely.
Then will come back in a short time but at a much lower volume and with noise.

Can anyone help me with this one?
Also can anyone suggest the best person to send the Sony for repair, Or slight modification?

I aint no expert, but what sort of usage is this happening with? Vocals might be doing that humidity thing, which I've heard does something similar in terms of symptoms. It could also be circuitry and/or heat related. Does baking it under a light bulb fix it? Does letting it cool off fix it? Or did it happen once and it's never been the same since? Are you running on the 9V battery or external power? Is the battery good? Anything loose? .......

Yeazha ... I've checked all of the usual suspects I believe it has to be traced back to the circuitry.

i had a preamp that did that,

turned out to be a duff capacitor. something to do with phantom supply? idk, i'm no expert either.

have you opened the mic to look for obvious blown components?


i'm only sayin that cos you're ruling out the moisture idea, but i'd recommend being 100% sure about that first (if you're not already)

i found this thread http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=60866 and others that put it down to moisture from speech/vocals up close.
 
I'll give that a shot Paul. Thank you for that link .... man he described my problem to a T and today I'll check it with a wind screen then a pop filter.
But it can't be that simple but I sure hope it is. For it has been very humid here in the Shire.

i duno if it's in that thread or another one that i read, but a few guys said they boxed the mic for months, then when they took it out it just worked!

so i'm guessin if this is your problem, it might need time to dry out, or some careful encouragement like shadow suggested!

That and I'll put a few of those moisture soak up things in it's box as well. ;)

Yeah...even moisture on the connectors can cause little pops/clicks...it pays to hit them with deoxit from time to time.

If it's not the moisture/pop filter...my first guess would be a capacitor going...?...or even the capsule itself (worst case).

I recently had an ADK Vienna mic doing some intemittent low-level noise/clicking/cutting-out...ended up being a cap. Sent it to ADK, tech fixed it for free...and replced a cople of other caps and also did the same for an ADK Hamburg which has similar electronics to the Vienna...all for FREE.
ADK support is very good!

Or his foam wind screens got a case of dandruff. And the dandruff got a magnetic crush on the mic element.

Cool ........Now who can I send this Sony to for a check up and fix if need and any possible modifications?
