I'm planning to buy Cubase 5 standard. I've been using C-4 ES for 15 months+/-.
Questiion; Has anybody had any experience with this? Can I transfer my old dongle to my friend in Vermont and allow him to use my copy of C-4 ES while he's learning the DAW ropes? And, will I have to register C-5 the same as I registered C-4 ES?

Thanks for any resp.

Not sure about your version but with 5 you can install it on any computer, I've got it on 3 and you just have to make sure the dongle is plugged in before you use it. I bought the full version and it came with the dongle, I would assume that the upgrade does not and you would need to add it to your existing one. So this may not work.

My understanding is yes you can. I was concerned about this when I bought a used version of Cubase 4 off of eBay last year. It is not a problem. I phoned Steinberg.

Also, since the license allows you to have Cubase installed on more than one computer, unless you need it on multiple computers, I think you could just let him use it without transferring it. There's nothing wrong with that that I'm aware of - you own it and you're letting him borrow it.

The dongle licensing program just keeps track of how many computers your version of Cubase is installed on. Where those computers are, different continents or whatever, doesn't matter.

Great. So, as I understand it, even with his computer and seperate email address, he can load the software and use it providing he has the dongle with the SW. I presume that, you can pass the software around anywhere as long as you have just one dongle (key) registered.

If I lost the key to my C-5 and my next door neighbor has one, weather it's C-4 or, C-5, the software will work....? All dongles are alike and can be used on any of the Steinberg programs that require the physical "key"...?

Right. Why buy multiple copies of the software package where you might have multiple sites of opperation for your software? Again, I presume that you can just buy another dongle seperately for some $35.00 and install multiple pc's with the software...? Every computer that has the software doesn't need to be registered seperately as long as you possess a key...?

Thanks very much! This will be good news to my friend in Vermont. :D

I don't think you can just buy dongles and get a registration for a product you own. From what I remember there was some sort of warning basically telling you to guard it with your life because if you lose it it's like losing your software.

When in doubt, phone Steinberg.

If I had any question about this I would ask them, not us! :)

Yep, you can sell it. The nice thing about a dongle. I don't remember if they are like ilok and make you pay to transfer the license, but even if they do it won't be that much.

But if you buy the upgrade option with the new software you lose the old license (because it's needed in order to get your new license) so in that case no you can't. If you go full retail on the new version, yep you can sell the old one.

Usually the new software comes with a new dongle (my copy of studio 5 did).

Yes if you upgrade you loose the license on the old product, you have to buy a new "full" version to keep the old one operational. Thus 2 USB keys one for the older product and one for the new.

I have Cubase SX3 and Cubase 4 and they both operate off of the same dongle.

Is that sanitary? :(

No. Handling another dongle is not in practice with good hygene. Mine is falling apart. The top and back came off so now I have to tape it together. The little red light still goes on and it still works of course.

They sell dongles at SamAsh. I've seen them. They're around $35. If you loose yours or it falls apart like mine it can be replaced with a new one. I'm not sure if it needs to be registered though.

Also, I'm wondering if the reason my dongle fell apart is because I keep pulling it out after I use the cubase program and put it into an envelope on my pc table so it doesn't get lost. Does anybody ever just leave it in when not in use?:laughings::laughings:

I leave my dongle in when it's not in use. God I feel so dirty.
